Congress overturned the President's veto to extend World War II veterans life insurance for another five years. The House voted 368 to 13 and the Senate 69 to 12 after the policies would have expired. Roosevelt had argued against another extension.
Concord reports the New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles tallies 49 deaths from auto accidents through May 29, 1937, with 60 injured in 44 crashes. Victims include William Keck of New York City and William Shea of Manchester. Officials stress bike safety and night lights and advise children ride on the right, avoid weaving.
Friday of next week marks a class day for the seniors at Portsmouth High School. Students are advised to prepare for the planned activities and attendance is expected.
Britain seeks a way out of the Spanish crisis and assures Germany it desires peace in Europe. Sir Nev ille Henderson, Britain's new ambassador, told a German English Society reception that Britain harbors no designs to constrain Germany and believes a sincere, useful friendship will foster European peace.
Harry Richards and Albert Cote survived a serious crash on Portsmouth Avenue Stratham when Richards turned to avoid a southbound car. The car struck a telephone pole snapped it and rolled end over end across a pit and embankment. Richards had a fractured leg and lacerations. Cote had minor injuries. Investigating officers include Maurice Dwyer Joseph Demasky James Brown and Officer Benjamin Hoitt.
The New Hampshire House passed a bill standardizing a one day in seven test, allowing a Concord publishing company to dispatch periodicals at designated times. The measure, controversial to Rep. William J. Callahan, drew AFL backing as labor reps noted workers often receive double pay on Sundays to meet deadlines.
An opportunity to see how cotton grows is offered in a window display at the George B. French Co. store. The exhibit aims to educate and interest children with its cotton boll presentation.

The State Industrial School trustees met six hours in Manchester to review candidates to succeed resigning superintendent George Aylsworth. No action on a replacement. Senate committee plans immediate investigation of the school with power to compel hearings and access to all records, funded up to $2000. The issue has drawn legislative scrutiny since the General Court opened.
Salem Coast Guards rescued Dr. John H. McCarthy a 53 year old Boston dentist after an amphibian aircraft piloted by Lieut. Com. F A Leamy plucked him from a schooner two miles west of the Isles of Shoals. He was brought to Salem hospital for emergency surgery and later reported in good condition.
The Statue of Liberty has developed a pale green verdigris patina after fifty years exposed to wind and rain. This copper oxidation forms a protective coating while altering the statue’s surface hue.
Eight year old Miss Jean O Webster, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Webster of Plaistow, died in a Haverhill hospital from a fractured skull and internal injuries after being struck by an automobile driven by Mary M Doolin of Bradford just after alighting from a school bus near her home. The accident occurred shortly after 4 PM. This brings New Hampshire automobiles crash deaths to 50 for the year.
The Portsmouth High School sophomore class held a morning assembly to award prizes for the essay contest What Constitutes Good Citizenship. Winners were Robert Garland Tucker for the boys and Camella Mary Cumbo for the girls, each receiving two-volume Life of Abraham Lincoln sets. Mayor Kennard E. Goldsmith presented the prizes and praised the contest. Representatives from the Fleet Naval Reserve Association and its Ladies Auxiliary attended.
Four German submarines departed for Spanish waters following the German government plan to transfer its fleet in response to Saturday’s air attack by Spanish warplanes on the pocket battleship Deutschland in Berlin.

George Hoebing of Chickasha Oklahoma caught 24 crappie and two catfish and delivered them to the sheriff's office as proof of his angling prowess.
A $1250 engagement ring belonging to a Nashua woman was found at Hampton Beach near L street after hours of digging by James E. Gynan and two residents. The ring was spotted in the sand through a screening effort that followed a weekend search by the owner and friends. Attorney Wason A. Guerin, representing the owner, paid a substantial reward to the finders.
A Rockingham County jury awarded John B. Woodburn of Hampton 20000 in a motor vehicle collision case against Frederick H. Magound of Methuen Mass. Edward Walsh was awarded 225 for damages in the same action involving Irving and Lillian Green. The June trial followed conferencing and one suit settlement.
Carl A. Wolcott of Medford testifies as first witness in a suit against Ralph Dunton of Bath. The July 27 1935 Seabrook crash involved several people. Wolcott describes pre existing and current injuries. Dr. Lawrence Murphy of Newburyport who treated Wolcott at Anna Jacques Hospital testifies as second witness.
