Selectmen hear library expansion needs in York
York town selectmen heard from the Library Expansion Committee that the current site on land leased from First Parish Church cannot support needed growth even with a 20 foot land addition. The library, built in 192, serves about 11,500 people and falls short of Maine standards, prompting talks of federal and state grants and possible relocation from Lang Sands Road area.

Bear sighting at York Beach Market window
A bear was spotted at about 1 a.m. Wednesday on its blue legs peering into the York Beach Fish Market on Main Street. It was chased by two motorcyclists, Stephen Lewhy of Medford and Peter of Gardiner, Maine, and custody was arranged with an engine department after a fireman arrived. The animal reportedly belonged to Animal Forest Park.

Wayne Galdworthy reported a first lane window entry at Sackson House with door left open but nothing taken. Ken Hurt said his son’s 20 inch Huffy bicycle with black features was stolen. Glenn Hoyt reported his son’s Montgomery Ward bicycle valued at 54.09 stolen from outside the Port Portsmouth Public Library. Dames Ferhley reported sunglasses worth 2 and four eight track tapes valued at 16 stolen from this car. Envy B. Margeson said his white fence was painted blue and roof, stable and garage damaged. Copper tubing and sprinkler heads stolen from Prescot Park. David Tucker reported a hole in his front door and smashed windshield.

In Portsmouth District Court, A Leominster man was fined 200 dollars and had driving privileges revoked for six months. Louis A Ingemi 24 pleaded innocent to a flashing red light and driving without a license. the latter was dropped and the former continued for sentence. William D Currier 55 of 440 Sapamare Rong changed plea to guilty on speeding related charges, fined 20, and a tire defect charge was dropped. A fugitive case against Alfred P Schulte was moved to superior court with 4000 bail. Ernest C Renwick had criminal mischief charges dropped. Several defendants faced pleas or continuances on assault, DWI, and traffic violations, with various fines, suspensions, or probation terms imposed or continued. Multiple defendants, including Barry A White and others, had charges continued or judgments entered with varying conditions.

Budget Meeting in South Berwick Sets District Budget
South Berwick residents attended a school district budget meeting where the budget of 2,422,218 was approved with no questions from the floor. Kittery Court Fines Range for Local Offenders
