Billy the pup saves old dog Duke from rising tide

In Kittery Point a 11 month old Chesapeake retriever named Billy rescued 12 year old setter Duke stranded in mud as the tide rose. Billy alerted Mrs Charles Keith of Beverly Mass and with help from neighbors and Brooks Perkins he led Duke to safety before the water covered the mud flat. Duke and Billy posed for photos after the dramatic rescue.

Berlin Officials Trade Allegations After Council Meeting

Parking Ordinances Enforced Today in Rye Beach Areas

Rye New parking rules entered effect today after town meeting. Police Chief Eli W. Perry outlines seasonal limits June 1 to October 1, banning parking on Sea Road, Ocean Boulevard sections, Cause Way Road, and in Jenness Beach areas with specific parallel and right angle parking. Prohibitions extend to certain streets in Rye Water district and curb vehicular loading only when loading or unloading.

Voters in Kittery Eliot to pick legislator in June

A special election set for June 18 in Kittery and Eliot to replace the late State Rep. Arthur W. Seaward IR Kittery. Gov Muskie has asked town committees to meet June 11 and report by June 13. The winner serves the remainder of the term unless a session is called before January. Voters will also nominate candidates for a full term starting January.

Traffic Signals To Be Installed At Islington Bartlett

City to install traffic lights at the Islington and Bartlett intersection within about three weeks. A contract worth 82,477 was awarded to R. W. Baron Inc. of Arlington, Mass. The traffic island at Bartlett will be moved to Islington with signals mounted on a pole.

ConCon Seen Winding Up In Mid June Despite Funds

New Hampshire Constitutional Convention president J. Walker Wiggin of Manchester said he is confident the session will finish by mid June despite a lack of funds. The Executive Council rejected a 20000 emergency appropriation, risking quorum and postponement to 1957 if money is not supplied. Delegates meet three days weekly to consider amendments to the 172 year old Constitution with only one resolution approved so far.

Rafferty Denied Parole In Durham Bank Robbery Case

ATLANTA Ga George Y Rafferty 27 has lost a bid for immediate release from a nine year term for his part in the 1954 Durham bank robbery Warden S T Wilkinson told The Portsmouth Herald Rafferty became parole eligible in February after Judge Aloysius J Connor cut his sentence to nine five years The judge has not acted on petitions from two other Portsmouth men Robert E Nelson and Albert J Lazzaro who were also convicted in the St Patrick s Day bank holdup Nelson seeks to vacate a 10 year sentence for assaulting a bank treasurer and Lazzaro asks to vacate five years of his nine year term.

Bay State Grants Stay to Murderer

The Massachusetts Executive Council unanimously granted a six month reprieve for Kenneth R. Chapin, delaying execution by Dec 1 to allow state and federal appeals. Chapin, 20, was sentenced to death for the killings of Lynn Ann Smith and Stephen R. Goldberg. Associate Justice Frankfurter granted time to file an appeal, leaving to Gov. Herter and the council the final decision on the stay.

Road Project Bid For Route 16 In Ossipee Wakefield

The State Highway Department announced T. W. Watkins & Son of Amesbury Massachusetts submitted the low bid of 369 494 for about 23 miles of highway on Route 16 in Ossipee and Wakefield. The project is scheduled for completion November 15 1957.
