Howard Dixon known as Pickles, longtime Portsmouth High School sports watcher and edgewood center resident, died Saturday. He traveled with the Portsmouth Clipper band and attended nearly every local game, beloved by fans and the Herald sports staff. His passion for Portsmouth athletics stood out in New Hampshire sports circles.

Kerry Will Lead World at Democratic National Convention

In Boston a packed Sheraton Boston Hotel ballroom hosted the first Democratic veterans caucus as Wayne Burton of Durham NH, a New Hampshire delegate, joined about 500 veterans. Speakers including Gen Wesley Clark Max Cleland and James Carville urged backing John Kerry citing military service and wartime stance while criticizing George W Bush. Roughly 1 000 attendees heard pleas to put a veteran in the White House.

Global air pollution study advances policy aims

The International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation aims to produce reliable science to guide policy. The Port of New Hampshire event marked the study’s halfway point as researchers from six countries track pollution from July 1 to August 15, traveling west to east across the U S and into Europe.
