Serious wreck on the Ohio and Little Kanawha railroad two miles below Connellsville O on July 24. The rear coach jumped a trestle and fell forty feet turning over. One killed, one dying, six or more fatally hurt, about a dozen seriously injured.

The Mayflower crossed into a dense fog off Tompkinsville Staten Island and anchored for the night. The boat departed Atlantic Highlands at 4 40 p m. with a party that had joined the president on his trip to Camp Franklin Murphy Seagin New Jersey.
Clinton Rand Thompson son of Sumner L. Thompson of Concord has been appointed as a cadet to the United States Naval Academy by Senator Gallinger. He joins Robert Pearson as Concord’s two candidates under a recent act of Congress to supply officers for the enlarged navy. Thompson, a Concord High senior in the scientific course, has gone with his mother to Annapolis for entrance preparations.
Captain Charles Hatch United States Marine Corps has arrived in the city to visit his fiancée Miss Maud Emery daughter of Judge Samuel W Emery. He served at Camp Long during the Spanish prisoners episode and has since been at the Asiatic station for about four years. He saw action in the Philippines and China and was recently ill in hospital but is improving. He has many friends in the city recalling Camp Long and the Spanish prisoners attraction.
The fleet of steamers, tugs, and schooners that carry coal is idle due to the strike. The losses run into millions for owners as many vessels can neither switch to other trades nor secure profitable charters. At some ports coal loading is halted and Chesapeake Bay ports show a large idle line awaiting cargoes.

Circus workers plan a trust uniting Barnum Bailey, Buffalo Bill's Wild West, and Forepaugh Sells Brothers. The Barnum Bailey Company will control the arrangement, dividing the United States England and Germany among the three shows so each can tour two years in each region with no opposition.
Inspector Flood of Boston arrives as Annie Intongarro and her companion Filippo Sai are found in the city and jailed after a Boston desertion. The husband identified them, spurring police to arrest, search a Wall Street residence, and return the pair to Boston. The woman plays an accordion in her cell, showing little concern.

William Jennings Bryan, noted for free silver policies and two presidential bids, traveled on the Bar Harbor Express to Bangor, Me. He aimed to speak there the next day but few fans saw him as he rested in his sleeper car. National committee men and Maine Democrats accompanied him, disembarking briefly at Portsmouth station.
