Greenland's Congregational Church marks 300 years of history
Greenland's Community Congregational Church, among the oldest in the state and the second oldest Congregational church, celebrates three centuries since the 1706 formation of the Greenland Congregational society after a 1705 town meeting. The original box pews carried family names Weeks Brackett Philbrook Lang and Haines. The first pastor William Allen served until 1760 and baptized 1092 people. A new church was built in 1756 on the same site. the current 60 by 42 foot structure retains a raised pulpit and dirt floor basement under its stone foundation.

The unique grafted elm, once admired for its drooping branches, cannot reproduce from seed and drew praise from Trees and Greenery Committee chair Peter Loughlin. Woman charged in $31K ring theft in Portsmouth
A Portsmouth woman Tonya York 35 of Saco Maine was arrested July 20 after video images and a police probe tied her to snatching a purse containing a 31000 ring and using a credit card from the purse at a Kmart then for beer and cigarettes at a gas station. York faces theft three counts fraudulent use of a credit card and receiving stolen property with further charges possible bail set at 25000 cash in Hampton District Court.

City fleet moves toward biodiesel test program
The PORTSMOUTH Public Works Department will fuel eight city vehicles with biodiesel this month in a test of a domestic renewable fuel derived from cooking oils that cuts emissions. If successful, all diesel customers may switch, says director Steve Parkinson, though officials want to ensure no problems before expanding.
