Louisville firefighters voted 358 to 30 to end their five day walkout and accept a new contract with the city. First crews returned to work shortly after 6 a.m. following the vote.
At a Moscow court hearing the Soviet radio and television service demanded retractions and apologies from U S reporters Craig Whitney of The New York Times and Harold Piper of The Baltimore Sun, plus 3330 in legal costs. The defendants, vacationing in the United States, notified the Moscow court of withdrawal from active participation, but the judge proceeded with the trial.
Concord New Hampshire Shane Devine was sworn today as judge of the U S District Court for New Hampshire by his predecessor Hugh Bownes who now sits on the 1st U S Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.
General Motors may pay up to 13.3 million in cash rebates to 66,782 Oldsmobile owners with Chevrolet engines in a settlement approved by U S District Court Judge Frank J McGarr. State attorneys general hailed it as the largest consumer protection settlement in U S history. Eligible owners will receive 200 dollar rebates and a transferable engine warranty. The agreement covers 46 states.
Boston commuters faced heavy downtown congestion Monday as repair work continued on the South Station Tunnel per state public works commissioner John J. Carroll. Separately, AP reports a mixed day on global markets with the dollar slipping in Europe after Bonn summit news and the yen steady near 202.18.
In Washington the U S Postal Service and three unions opened high stakes negotiations over a three year contract as the looming strike threat looms. Wages job security and overtime remain sticking points with a no layoff clause central to the unions demands. The pact covering 554 000 workers expires at midnight Thursday and a potential strike looms despite federal law against walkouts.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission refused PSC a delay in Seabrook shutdown after Friday. About 1,800 construction workers would be laid off this week, with 400 retained to maintain the site. KITTERY town council approves a Navy contract for incinerator use. Navy to pay up to 250000 in capital costs and operate at 131600 annually, supplying about 40 percent of plant waste. A July 27 special meeting will address the budget with an 18 month fiscal plan.
A 19-year-old Eliot man died when his motorcycle collided with a 10 wheel truck on Raydon Road. The truck was driven by 24-year-old Jimmy A. Stuard of Wells. The victim’s identity was withheld pending kin notification. State Trooper Jerry Flowers said the case remains under investigation.
The Water Resources Special Board approved a dredge and fill project in the Piscataqua River for Granite State Minerals, Inc., Portsmouth owner David F. Mahoney. The work aims to improve docking facilities by dredging 700 cubic yards and placing 7,600 cubic yards of fill in three 50 foot caissons, with completion expected by Sept 1, 1980. The plan drew no opposition and received letters of non objection from local officials. public hearing was requested by Mrs. Clotilde Straus but the petition passed with one dissentic vote.
Seabrook will may hold a special town meeting after a petition circulated by Selectman James Falconer calls for discussion on the legality of discontinuing Rocks Road and letting PSC use it. The road portion lies inside a 715 acre nuclear site and has been "obliterated" per Falconer.
The Advisory Committee on Reactor Safety endorsed the Charlestown project as operable with reasonable assurance that public health and safety would not be jeopardized. The ACRS ruling is only advisory to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and does not authorize construction.
The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled water companies owe no liability for fires due to hydrant pressure. It held Hampton Water Works Co. cannot be sued for damages when hydrant pressure failed to stop a fire that destroyed Clinton Libbey’s home. The court noted water firms exist to supply water and may go bankrupt under liability for fires. In a separate ruling, the court decided Keene State College lecturers should be counted in the faculty bargaining unit, sending the Keene State case back to the Public Employees Labor Relations Board.
President Carter, back from the Bonn economic summit, vowed to reduce U S oil consumption and press Congress to help. He said he would raise the price of domestically produced oil to align with world market levels by the end of 1980, recognizing the difficulty of cutting imports.
