The Isles of Shoals disaster dominates Portsmouth as search efforts continue for missing isles party members. The whaleboat was located. divers prepare as authorities expect further recoveries. Skipper Miles defends vessel safety while townsfolk gather at the morgue and homes. Relatives mourn Ella Adams and Hattie Gilmore among the stranded families.
Eyewitness recounts a deadly Isles of Shoals voyage where four bodies were brought ashore and five more were found floating. Rescuers recovered two of the victims, including Ena, amid a grim, daylight recovery effort with fishermen using grappling irons.
J E Conley of Malden Mass arrived in the city to claim the body of Bessie Chase after a false report of her recovery misled him. Grief stricken, he learned the body remained at sea. The article lists other victims’ bodies claimed for burial, including Bertha Graham Laura Gilmore Anna Sheehan Minnie McDonald and Nellie Collins. Ella and Hay Adams’ funeral is set for Sunday at the Adams homestead.
Well known here Laura Gilmore and her sister Halitie were lively youths. Laura drowned during a boating trip and her body will be shipped to Exeter. A misidentified name, Isabel Kaouska, is corrected to Ziolaouska as reported by Florence Doherty who claimed the bodies.
At a regular Ports mouth council meeting No. & O. U. A. M. officers for the term were installed by State Deputy William C. Walton with assist from Past State Councilor Knowles. Officers named include CG. W. Hanson as Councilor and John Topper as Vice Councilor with a full slate of executive, secretarial, and protecting officers. The council hosted four Buesats from Governor Ware council No. 12 of Seabrook.
Farewell remarks by Murnel Allen aboard the Merry coneng recount a party at Star Island wharf ready to sail when the captain blew a farewell salute as the boat departed. The recorder notes the celebration mood contrasted with the disaster.
Postponement of the planned Shoals excursion by PK and Y announced with notice of delays and warnings. The brief text mentions a hazardous plague and promotes Don's Ointment at a drug store as a supposed cure, noting price at cents.
Mise Filla Adama, housekeeper at the Oceanic hotel, was overcome with tears upon learning of the incident. Report reached her at Ave o'clock as the scene unfolded, revealing a distressing event that drew heartfelt responses from those nearby.
The incident recalls a 1825 tragedy at the Isles of Shoals when seven lives were lost after a pilot boat capsized near the harbor entrance. Edwin Baxter Steevens led a day trip with John Veazey as master. seven children and adults perished, and none of the bodies or wreckage were recovered. Samuel P. Treadwell, then a city official, recalled the event. The last voyage occurred on June 23, 1825.
Abby A Hodgdon died at her Main Street home in Exeter on Wednesday evening her fifty third birthday after two years of illness with consumption. Born July 16 1843 in Portsmouth she was daughter of Calvin S and Lucy M Wiggin Hodgdon and was the last of her family. A member of Phillips church Exeter, funeral services will be held Saturday at two o clock at the residence.
