A dust explosion at Lost Creek mine near Oskaloosa Iowa killed twenty one workers and left eight injured two seriously. Fire and structural damage slowed rescue as volunteers reached the scene and recovered the dead and injured. Property damage is estimated at ten thousand dollars. most miners were married with families left in poverty.
Salem January 24 Essex county grand jury returns a true bill in ten counts against Robert Pollock president of the Salem License commission charging him with attempting to bribe Alderman George Hathaway Pollock placed under arrest this afternoon Indictments also returned in Lawrence Poor department cases tied to city marshal nomination by Mayor Hurley and other parties not yet disclosed
The coroner’s inquest in New York returned a verdict exonerating locomotive crewmen John M. Wisker and B. C. Fyler after a crash that killed seventeen. The blame was placed on railroad officials for the conditions leading to the accident. Wisker and Fyler were released from custody.
The president referred the Schley appeal to the Navy Department for comment. This naval law term marks a reply to a criticism. Preparation of the comment is expected to take about two weeks.
Portland, Jan 24. A contested divorce suit is on trial before a jury in the Maine Supreme Court. Charles W. Morve, a city printer, accuses his wife of cruel and abusive treatment. They were married in Boston last July. He testified then he married again.
The woman testified to an almost constant fight during their brief cohabitation, saying she tried to shoot him and assaulted him with a knife and hatchet while threatening to poison him. Washington reports that the gunboat Machias, nearing completion, may join the North Atlantic squadron in West Indian waters to replace the departed Marietta at Culebra Island for Colón, Colombia.
Near one hundred officers under Inspector Cross raided the lower Bowery in a decisive sweep. Dozens of notorious resorts were shut, thirty two people were locked up, and each raid ends with the proprietor arrested. It signals a broader campaign to close the famed district.

Belfast Me Jan 24 Luther Gannett aged eighty eight who lived alone was burned to death in his home early today. Fire started when he attempted to light a lamp and set fire to bedclothes. He was very feeble and likely overcome while trying to extinguish the blaze.
Washington Jan 25 an official report to the post office department states that a smuggling scheme used by Montreal furriers to ship goods across the border into Vermont and mail furs to U S points has been completely broken up. The tinyleadhes in the scheme have been driven out of business.
Augusta January 25 The Kennebec county superior court January grand jury reported Friday after a session since Tuesday It returned 107 indictments of which 106 were against alleged violators of the prohibitory law The remaining case involved breaking entering and larceny
George Dixon, veteran colored pugilist, fell to Eddie Lenny in a rain of body blows in Baltimore on January 24. Lenny dominated the sparring display from bell to bell, earning a clear victory tonight.

The R S S Brine Transportation company seeks an injunction from Judge Braley in superior court to stop Teamsters Union officers and Allied Freight Transportation Council members from interfering with its business and to prevent a strike by council members. A restraining order lasts until Monday at 2 PM while merits are heard. Police arrest about twenty for crying scab and obstructing team movements.
Secretary Long challenged a naval chaplain’s request for higher pay and longevity benefits. He said chaplains earn about what civil clergy make and windfalls in age do not apply to ministers, while praising their work but noting they are comparatively fortunate versus other professionals.
Concord January 25 Michael J Fanning state superintendent of the New Hampshire Anti Saloon League said he has an offer to move to New York to continue the work he has led in the state for months He indicated he will likely leave the capital within two weeks and pursue the new posting.
