United States army transport Duford under Col Moore of the Eleventh cavalry began its voyage to Manila this afternoon but dense lower bay fog forced anchoring until daylight. The ship carries a squadron of Eleventh cavalry and a battalion of the Twenty-seventh infantry.
In Hebronville near Attleboro George Brown an Armenian lies at the point of death in Pawtucket emergency hospital after an assault by Nicholas Gunter another Armenian. Both men worked at Hebronville Manufacturing Company mill. Gunter is in custody.
Copenhagen January 22. Announcement states the Danish West Indies sale treaty with the United States will be signed this week in Washington. The deal amounts to about 4 million dollars and all formalities have been completed locally.

In Washington on January 22 the urgency deficiency bill faced a row over a $500,000 Manila post appropriation. Rep Cannon proposed shifting the money to shelter for Philippine officers and men, prompting a sharp debate with Rep Richardson and others. Rep Creamer voted with Republicans and angrily challenged his party while shouting that he hoped his arm would be paralyzed for not backing U S soldiers. The amendment passed with 127 to 100 in favor.

Ira C. Evans, printer and publisher born April 16, 1841 in Hill, died in Concord this morning. A Civil War drummer and former secretary of the Twelfth Regiment association, he founded the Veterans' Advocate and led Grand Army circles as past commander of the EE. EE. Sturtevant post. He was active in Masons and Odd Fellows.
In Mimico Ontario a letter to Rev Joseph Hamilton from Mrs Elizabeth B Sampson widow of Admiral Sampson offers guarded hope for his recovery. She says he is very ill yet she clings to possible improvement with spring, thanking the minister for sympathy and signaling cautious optimism.
Gov Taft of the Philippines told a Call reporter that a standing army of fifteen thousand men will be sufficient in the islands before year end. He noted officers versed in the situation provided the figures.

Edward D Seabrook Felch, a longtime resident and charter Advent Church member since 1865, died Monday after weeks of illness. Native to the town, he lived here except for fishing seasons in the bay and on the St Lawrence voyage that influenced his Christian faith. The faithful nurse who cared for him aboard spoke of his lifelong belief in prayer and church devotion.
