Hanscom becomes senior naval constructor at retirement
The retirement of the present chief makes Hanscom the senior naval constructor on the active list. Born April 21 1642 in Eliot Maine he served in the Twenty seventh Maine during the Civil War and holds an honorable discharge. He was appointed assistant naval constructor in 1875 ranked first among fifteen contenders and promoted to constructor in 1888. He has long been seen as a top navy official and will retire in 1909 after decades of service.

Two Rye Men Hurt In Streetcar Collision
Austin and George Trefethen of Rye narrowly escaped serious injury Saturday afternoon when their horse frightened by an approaching Portsmouth streetcar struck the team near Ferries corner. Ansliv Trefethen suffered facial wounds and bruises after hitting a stone wall. his brother escaped with minor injuries. The wrecked team was left on the scene and the injured man was taken to the city for treatment.
