Boston readers learn the state police and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority plan a Logan Airport crackdown after a Globe investigation found drivers cheating by taking multiple fares and overcharging. Troopers will be deployed to enforce rules.
The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled no violation in a drunken driving case linked to Lackester's restaurant. The court said the on scene investigation did not infringe Miranda rights and that the questioning followed routine procedures. Justice Grimes dissented, questioning future police practice in federal courts.
Coast Guardsman James P. Grier of Rockport received the William Penn Harding Award and a $3100 check from former Senator Leverett Saltonstall at the U S Public Health Service Hospital for his Oct 5 1969 rescue. Gibbs Lukoskie and his son Steven were aboard a sailboat driven onto rocks near Rockport harbor by 12 foot seas. Nanette Lukoskie the sailor's wife drowned and is a patient in the hospital after an injury during the rescue.
William F. Shea of Boston had a murder charge dismissed in Boston Municipal Court after a key witness failed to identify him. Chief Justice Elijah Action said there was no cause to hold Shea, accused of fatally shooting Lawrence Miller during a September 28 robbery at a Bedford Street parking garage where Miller worked as a cashier. Police lacked additional evidence against Shea.
North Hampton finals will feature seven finalists chosen from a field of 111 entrants. Judges evaluated body control and delivery as finalists John Weston Bonnie Mahan Susanne Den and others compete Jan. 20 for top honors sponsored by the North Hampton PTA.
