Haverhill Massachusetts fire crews fought a freezing blaze that ruined the three story YMCA building. The roof collapsed at 7 20 p m as flames raged for hours. Seven boys by the pool escaped unharmed. Loss placed at 500000 with about three fifths insured. Investigators say the fire started from a motor in the pool area ventilation system.
Gov Dwinell and the New Hampshire Governor's Council pressed the state Milk Control Board to obtain an official ruling from Attorney General Louis C Wyman on its authority to set prices in Candia and 43 nearby towns without evidence of public health risk The dispute grew after Candia dairyman Aime Jacob refused to raise raw milk prices from 19 to 23 cents a quart claiming the board seeks to squeeze him out and noting profits at 19 cents a quart.
Col James W Chapman Jr USAF has assumed command of the 100th Bomb Wing at Portsmouth Air Base. The 44 year old native of Austin Texas becomes wing commander and takes full command of Air Force activities at the base amid activation of the 390th Bomb Wing and deactivation of the Air Base Squadron currently led by Lt Col Andreao. The ceremony marked a swift transition as officers and men prepare for future operations at one of the nation’s best bases with top facilities and readiness described by Chapman.

New England counted its first holiday highway fatality last night when Alfred J. Levesque, 46, of Roxbury, Mass., was killed in a head-on collision on Route 1 in Seabrook. It was New Hampshire’s 106th road death this year. State Police said Levesque’s car collided with a northbound vehicle driven by Robert L. Fuller, 38, of Newburyport, as Fuller attempted to pass another vehicle. Levesque’s wife, Mrs. Josephine C. Levesque, 34, was not described further in available details.
