Tacoma reports rising family confidence that Charles Mattson, 10, kidnapped, is safe as speculation grows that contact with the abductor has occurred. Dr. W. W. Mattson denied ransom statements while Mr. Mattson and son William were seen leaving to an undisclosed destination amid talk of a $28,000 ransom.

An 85yearold woman two other adults and two children were rescued when fire swept the home of Thomas Gunning 48 Adams street East Milton. Gunning and neighbor Justin Callahan carried to safety Mrs Catherine Gunning 85 and assisted from the burning house. Miss Alice Gunning 54 Miss Mary Gunning 50 Thomas Gunning Jr 13 and James Gunning 8 were also removed from danger.
The new city government will be inaugurated Friday at 10 o'clock in the council chambers. Mayor Robert Marvin will deliver an exaugural address and Mayor-elect Goldsmith will be sworn in, then swear in the city council as part of the inaugural ceremonies.
Washington December 31 Admiral William H Standley retires as chief of naval operations as shipbuilding policy changes with the Washington and London treaty expiry. Admiral Leahy succeeds him to command 307 vessels totaling 1 070 478 tons while 95 more vessels are under construction or authorized. Standley has served 45 years in the Navy since sail-powered days.
London dispatch reports Britain will start the world’s naval armament race on New Year’s Day by laying the keels of two 35,000-ton battleships. Naval limitation treaties expire at midnight Thursday, prompting a rapid build by France, Japan, the United States, Italy, Germany, Russia, and others as powers enlarge their programs after the Washington and London 1930 agreements were denounced on December 27, 1934.
Gov Harold Hoffman in Trenton says he knows nothing of a published report that a 21650 goldback pile from the Lindbergh ransom had been found by New Jersey state troopers. Police chief Kimberling calls the tale false and the investigation quiet, noting the ransom money reportedly accounted for.

Cars operated by Ora F. Wright of Kittery and Charles W. Rogers of byfield Mass collided in Amesbury Massachusetts on Tuesday. Authorities report both drivers suffered slight injuries and both cars were damaged.
