Fire of undetermined origin driven by high wind threatened North Stratford this morning, destroying nine large wooden structures including the municipal library, five businesses, and two apartments with losses over 20000 dollars. Fire Chief Aston Stevens cited a Tri Restaurant run by David LaCasse. water froze quickly as hoses battled the blaze. The fire also consumed a restaurant owned by Angelo D Americo, the Frank Ball Variety Store, a barber shop owned by Thomas Richardson, a vacant store, and leveled the Stratford public library.
D. & Allen Sr of Manchester announces a movement by Spanish War Veteran organizations to make June 17 a legal holiday in New Hampshire. They want the Legislature to recognize the date to honor General John Stark and his 1700 New Hampshire soldiers at Bennington and the start of Stark’s march in the Revolutionary War. The veterans voted last August to sponsor the bill when the General Court meets next week.
Portsmouth merchants enjoyed a busy December season with strong Christmas trade. The Portsmouth Merchants Bureau highlight decorations produced with National Youth Administration support and city cooperation. A post New Year directors meeting will discuss parking needs and a second parking lot. New bureau members include many local businesses and shops. The federal display at the San Francisco World's Fair will feature a $100,000 exhibit.
Rev. Herbert E. Hannon urged Littleton residents to avert the hospital closure at a special meeting. Citizens backed a proposal to borrow 6000 dollars to cover current debt, supporting continued operation under present management. He cited annual town spending and past summer resident donations as proofs of commitment to preserving life.
Gardiner, Me. Herbert F. Small, 38, of West Gardiner, dies in hospital from injuries after being struck by a car driven by Earl Barker of West Gardiner. Small left a widow and three children. Two children left fatherless after the death of Sidney Emstrom, 37, of Malden, found wounded after leaving his father’s home. a shotgun lay beneath his body. Greenfield, Dec. 30 AP Charles B. Chase Jr., 21, found dead at a cow barn. Wilton High School graduate. Dec. 30 AP James Haran, 46, who punched Mayor LaGuardia on City Hall steps ten days earlier, transferred from Bellevue Psychopathic Pavilion to Kings Park Hospital. Hagan blames LaGuardia for WPA job loss. Cambridge, Mass. Judge Wilford D. Gray sets hearing for Tuesday on Woburn mayor Kane’s motion to quash indictment over alleged education funding failures. Kane claims grand juror’s relative would financially benefit if city were convicted.
Concord December 30 The Governor and Council reappointed State Labor Commissioner John B. Davie and State Purchasing Agent Harold Cheney of Concord to three year terms. Davie, dean of state officials, has served since 1911. Cheney since June 1932. New appointments included George Harris Nashua to the Board of Investments and others to professional boards. Leon Ripley and Willard Wight named justices of the trustee PAL courts at Colebrook and Littleton.
Natick Massachusetts December 30 AP Dragged to safety at the end of a hockey stick after ice broke beneath her Miss Margaret Stone 28 underwent treatment for shock and aversion from a skating accident that killed her companion James A Ellingwood Jr 17 who drowned when ice broke pitching them into twelve feet of water near Lake Cochituate Miss Stone clung to an ice cake until rescued by fellow skaters
One man identified as Manheim Wesler, 65, died at Roosevelt Hospital after a fire destroyed the bar and grill of the Hotel Lido at 65th Street and Columbus Avenue. Several people were rescued, many forced to sleep in their clothes as flames raged.
The Admiralty reported the British freighter Marionga damaged but crew returned to the ship and found her undamaged off the east coast of Spain. Marionga had sailed Saturday from Oran to Barcelona with a 4236 ton capacity. An SOS was sent by Mokonga after bombing, as her crew fled to boats, reporting position near the Beleari Islands amid insurgent air activity.
Denver AP reports during Colorado pheasant hunting season 24, 975 hunters killed and retrieved 30,205 birds. J. D. Hart, chief state game warden, estimates. Additionally 7,555 birds were cranled but not retrieved by hunters, le estimated.
At a Governor and Council meeting two vacancies on the State Racing Commission were filled. William L. Phinney of Manchester becomes chairman, succeeding Ralph H. George. Edgar J. Malley of Newport is named minority member, succeeding Irving A. Hinkley. Allen of Portsmouth remains third member. terms run to 1940. Phinney is 29, a Dartmouth and Harvard Law School graduate, former Justice Department special agent, and Republican. Malley, 53, a Democrat, is a Newport native, former General Court representative, former postmaster (1913–1924), town moderator, health officer, and mill inspector.
Rev Blord G Kinsley pastor of Hampton Congregational Church sustained a laceration over the right eye when his car crashed into a pole on the Exeter Manchester road in Auburn. His wife Mrs Sybil My Kinsley 50 of Montpelier Vt suffered cuts bruises and possible fracture of the right leg. They were taken to a Manchester hospital for treatment. Rev Elnsley formerly pastor at North Hampton Congregational Church now presides at Hampton church after Rev Herbert Walker’s resignation.
Shanghai dispatch notes Japanese planes bombed Shiuchow one hundred twenty miles north of Canton. Two missionary homes suffered severe damage but no casualties were reported. Americans affected include Dr and Mrs J R Saunders of Adamsville Tennessee B A Thompson of Springfield Missouri and M W Rankin of Newberry South Carolina.
Cambridge, Dec 30 AP report states a gunman robbed a fruit and confectionery clerk of 1000 dollars while several customers waited patiently. The robber wore horn-rimmed glasses and ordered a package of bills before fleeing as the clerk complied.
One firefighter was injured as a four alarm blaze gutted a five story machinery store and wares house in downtown Buffalo. Fire officials estimated damage at 60 thousand to 70 thousand dollars. the Buffalo Mill Supply Company occupied the building.
Exeter officials and citizens debate a conditional pardon granted to two youths from Brentwood Institution for an assault and robbery in Exeter. Chief Chrysler warns law enforcement will continue and questions the impact on youths respect for the law.
Police seek the Waterville killer after the driver’s charred body was found in a fire-ravaged barn. Investigators say robbery appears the motive as officers recover bank books totaling $8,400 and stock holdings, with blood stained glasses and a hole in the skull noted at the scene.
