The government lending program reports huge cash disbursements to banks railroads farms and states for relief and employment. By November 30 repayments reached 283 million with banks repaying over 233 million. Loans totaled 808 million to 5382 banks, with total authorizations to November 30 at 1.54 billion to 6494 financial entities and 52 million for farm product marketing.
New York December 30 The stock market extended its recovery though tobacco shares showed isolated weakness. Short covering before the holiday helped lift prices. Liggett & Myers rose before steady support. American Tobacco slipped about half, Reynolds and Lorillard eased moderately. Copper issues firmed with Iron and Iron products up over a point. U S Steel Allied Chemical Union Pacific and others rose about a point. General Motors Westinghouse and Standard of New Jersey remained firm.
Four masked robbers seized about 521,000 in wages from Arkwright Mill No 2 clerks in Fall River Massachusetts. The bandits blocked the mill yard in a sedan after the clerks had picked up the money from B M O Durfee Trust Co. They fled in their own car as state troopers scoured highways. Clerks named are Bernard Swales Bertram Clegg and Raymond Parent.
Walter J. A. Ward of Concord, state house superintendent for 11 years, is retired by the Governor and Council. Professor Harold John Lockwood of Dartmouth College will succeed him January 15 and will also serve as power engineer advisor while preparing for the General Court session.
A still alarm at 12.55 pm reported a fire at Hett's dump on Maplewood Avenue. Firefighters quickly battled the flames, preventing major damage to the facility and surrounding area. No injuries reported.
A damaging event caused fear among nearby residents as authorities assessed the scene. Local officials urged calm while investigating the incident and cordoned off the area to ensure safety.
Six federal agents seized three trucks laden with 650 cases of imported liquor in Little Compton Rhode Island on December 30. The trucks had reportedly just landed from the Sakonnet River and fled from agents as they tried to depart the beach. Drivers used fictitious registrations.
New York police say Mrs. Isabella M. Dudley a 55 year old piano teacher leaped from a sixth floor window at 503 West 178th street yesterday. A note reportedly blamed a neighbor's insistent radio for worsening her nerves until life became unbearable. She had hip and spine injuries two years ago and used a wheelchair for 19 months.
City Council members and department heads will gather at the firemen's hall on Court Street tonight for a banquet and testimonial honoring retiring Mayor F. W. Hartford. An estimated 30 to 35 attendees are expected.
Albany, Dec 30 President elect Roosevelt promised Mary Mooney, mother of imprisoned Tom Mooney, he would write to Governor Rolph after he retires. He could not say what the letter would say but trusted public belief in Mooney’s innocence. The 8 year old mother, serving life for the Preparedness Day bombing, failed to meet Roosevelt as he left the Capitol. Roosevelt invited her to the executive mansion for a further audience.
The Associated Press reports fishing tackle sales have quadrupled as unemployment rises. W. H. Ruhaak, a sourcing goods buyer and statistician who tracks fishing conditions nationwide, says jobless men and women turn to fishing for food and sport, boosting demand across sectors.
In Durango Colorado on December 30 geologists warned that the carbon mountain slides may trigger Smelter Mountain landslides toward the town. Locals feared rockfalls could push Smelter Mountain into the city, prompting evacuations if rumblings continued.
Coast Guard Modoc intercepted a wireless report that all hands were saved from the burning tanker Dorris Kellogg. The crew abandoned to three lifeboats before being picked up by Delaware Sun 35 miles south of Frying Pan Shoals lightship. Vessel built 1920 Hog Island PA, 5030 GRT, 200 feet long. Owner listed as New York and Philippine Steamship Corp of Delaware.
The Young Women's Guild of the Methodist Church met at Miss Jessie Penney's Pear Street home Thursday evening with seventeen in attendance. The group opened with prayer, conducted a business session, and approved secretary and treasurer reports before forming a committee to plan a social event.
