Rum Runners Slain as Coast Guard Seizes Smuggling Vessel

Three liquor smugglers were killed and a fourth wounded when Coast Guard patrol boat CG-290 intercepted the ram runner Black Duck of Newport off New London. Under heavy fog early Sunday, bullets struck the pilot house as the vessel attempted to flee, with 300 cases of liquor seized and the ship brought to Newport for treatment and processing.

Guard Stabbed as Convicts Try Escape

Jefferson City Mo Dec 30 a guard John P Bradley was stabbed and wounded in the abdomen and head by inmates Virgil Davis and Clarence Hensen during an escape attempt at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Davis was shot by a tower guard and Hensen was captured nearby. Bradley remained in a hospital with multiple injuries while Davis and Hensen were treated in prison facilities.

Fire ravages Broadway Building in Camden amid heavy snow

A snow storm hampered Camden firefighters as flames swept the Broadway Building in the business district. Damages are estimated at 109000. Firefighters fought for over four hours, preventing spread to neighboring structures while several firefighters were overcome by smoke and treated at the scene.
