The Associated Press reports 714 Americans died in accidents during the four day Christmas weekend. Among them 533 fatalities occurred in traffic incidents. Neither figure matched the National Safety Council pre holiday forecast of 590 deaths during the 102 hour period from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday local time.

A $10,000 blaze Saturday night destroyed a 12 room frame house on Cate Street Epping causing six people to be homeless. Alfred D. Poliquin owner widow and daughter in law plus husband and three children were displaced. Fire Chief Heath said the back kitchen likely started the fire spreading to the second floor and attic prompting Exeter aid. Firemen and neighbors removed furniture as flames consumed the upper floors. the blaze began about 6 p m and burned nearly four hours. The house was insured and most water and smoke damage affected the first floor. The displaced include Poliquin and George Bascom and their six person family staying with Alfred Jr. until new quarters are found.
General MacArthur denounces President Truman's claim that he wanted to drag the U.S. into an all-out war in the Far East as inaccurate and misleading. The White House refused to comment while Courtney Whitney released MacArthur's statement arguing his aim was to end the war, not extend it, noting the high casualty toll and risks of prolonging conflict.
A Portsmouth Naval Shipyard worker, Napoleon Sasseville, 56, of Hooksett, collapsed and died from a heart attack minutes after returning to work from a pre return to duty physical at the shipyard dispensary. Navy officials reported his death to his wife, Flora Sasseville, and noted he had just resumed duties as a rigger following an extended illness.
City Manager Robert C. Violatette announces a special rubbish collection program for Christmas trees and holiday decorations. Rubbish trucks cannot handle trees, so Highway Department workers will pick up trees in open trucks across the city throughout the coming week.
City Solicitor Thomas E Flynn Jr and attorney Robert W Upton filed a motion for a rehearing with the Public Utilities Commission to perfect an appeal of the discontinuance of passenger service on the Portsmouth Concord branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad. The PUC earlier allowed one weekday train to be discontinued and set a schedule with an 8 30 a m Portsmouth departure and 3 45 p m return.
An alternate plan for supplying water to Portsmouth and surrounding communities will be announced and studied tomorrow at a meeting of the State Planning and Development Commission. The Boston firm prepared the plan as a possible alternative to Army Engineers’ submissions. The meeting will be held in City Hall at 7 30 p.m. Representatives from surrounding communities are expected to attend.

Avery R. Schiller of Public Service Company of New Hampshire says the utility studies a second 40,000 kilowatt plant at Schiller Station off Gosling Road to join the existing facility. The earlier addition cost about 9.75 million dollars. the new unit could cost a similar amount and be in service by 1955. By that year the company expects 580 million dollars invested across New Hampshire facilities.
Nashua police reported today a one year-old local boy has admitted setting nine fires in the Nashua area. The latest blaze occurred at the Christian Advent Church and led investigators to the boy. Police declined to discuss potential action against him.
