Three more Soviet vessels the Trepang Peramutr and Chiaka have appeared in Caribbean waters en route from the Baltic to Viatlivostok via St Thomas the Virgin Islands the Panama Canal and Honolulu. Authorities say they are “fishing ships” but lack gear and carry powerful radios. This rises total similar ships to 15 in two and a half years.

New Hampshire Public Service's Schiller station, a $5,000,000 facility designed for mercury steam cycle, will be switched on January 18. The plant can produce 40,000 kilowatts with a 25,000 kw turbine and two 7,500 kw mercury vapor turbines, feeding power along hi-lines to Manchester and Nashua. Construction began October 1947 on a 23,232 square foot site near the Portsmouth Newington line, with a public preview for press ahead of spring dedication.
Five town officials including Town Manager Robert B. Weiss donated a pint each at Maine General Hospital to defray a fellow townsman's cancer treatment bill. The welfare fund held only 200, hospital staff agreed to a 50 reduction if blood was donated, but all five gave blood, lowering the total bill to 100 dollars for four weeks of care.
State reorganization commission members agreed to work day and night to finish meetings next Thursday and Friday. They reversed several votes, kept the welfare department, and added a bureau for veteran services. They also retained the aeronautics commission and rejected merging it with the public service panel. A mysterious object moving southwestward drew scores of Carolinians to sight it from Fayetteville Hamlet and Greenwood. first spotted near Fayetteville about 4 30 pm yesterday then seen over Hamlet at 4 45 pm and late today over Greenwood near 5 pm. observers described a balloon blimp neon tube or smoke streak with 10 15 minute pursuit by four pilots.
In Mayerhill, Massman area Rockingham sheriffs raid a garage used as a betting house run by Andrew J. Sarto. He pleads guilty in Plaistow court, fined 50 dollars and receives a suspended 20 day jail term. Sheriff Frink notes one phone in operation and minimal business. County Solicitor Boynton prosecutes. deputies Osgood Judkins and Gosselin assist.
U S Commerce Secretary Charles Sawyer blamed high production costs scarce equity capital and tax adjustment needs for New England's slump and unemployment rise. He noted a regional manufacturing concentration and postwar readjustments, while affirming the New England economy remains fundamentally sound.
