In Washington on December 29 a Democrat argues Roosevelt should be the party’s best man for 1949. The piece praises Roosevelt as a master leader who reshapes democracy to meet needs, warns against replacing him, and contemplates political gains and practical precedent amid liberal currents.
Fragmentary weather note from Hampshire reports light snow tonight or Friday with rising winds and much colder conditions. Early morning temperatures around 25 and 12.15 am indicate rapid temperature changes.
Property owners in Kittery have been notified that the Maine New Hampshire Bridge Authority seeks condemnation to acquire a 100 foot wide strip for a new bridge and highway linking Lafayette Road at Greenleaf Avenue with Route 1 near Remick's Corner. A hearing is set for January 5 at Exeter Court House after a petition filed December 24.
Citizens in Exeter express anger as Bruna Kucharski and Robert Gingras, each about 20, receive conditional pardons for attacking and robbing a 70 year old man. The Governor and Council granted the pardons December 14 without a hearing, sparking debate about legality and fairness.
Year end wage disputes push truck driver strikes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In Boston the Arbitration Board summoned a meeting of employers and drivers at the State House to break a deadlock. Dover, Nashua area drivers prepare for a strike vote. About 5,000 Massachusetts drivers across 250 firms and 400 New Hampshire drivers across 2% truck lines would be affected. Union seeks $40 for a 30 hour week versus $37 for 48 hours. New Hampshire talks include paid two week vacations and wage hikes from 60 to 82 cents per hour. Concord and other towns vote tomorrow night in Manchester.
In Plymouth Massachusetts on February 29 an attack felled guard Frank Monish 40 during rounds at the Plymouth jail. Sheriff Charles H Robbins said the injury appeared serious and he believed he could name the assailant as the assailant struck during a possible attempted break.
Police report a truck driver James Gardner stopped on a highway right lane to pick up two boys. Wilfred Riley failed to stop crashing into the rear of the truck. Robert Boardman crashed into a ditch and a tree. Both Riley and Boardman were injured as their cars were badly damaged.
Monish Sai believes the master lock in a cell block was tampered with and that the prisoner left his cell during the attack and returned. A broom handle was found in the cell block. Three stitches were needed to close a head wound on Monish.
After a three day search Dover Police arrested Charles George 21 and Henry Wong 18 a Chinese boxer for assaulting and robbing A B Sykes 82 store keeper on Saturday night A third juvenile was also brought to juvenile court George and Wong were arraigned before Judge Patrick Murphy on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty. Both posted bonds of 2000 for the February term of Superior court and were represented by Everett J Galloway Sykes was felled in his store by one of the pair while another held his attention and a third waited outside
A flurry of AP dispatches reports deaths from accidents and violence. Fred Daoust, 35, was killed in Fitchburg Massachusetts in a hit and run on Route 2 and died en route to Burbank hospital. In Tientsin, Wang Cha-Lin head of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Wes, the salt commissioner, were fatally wounded leaving a restaurant in the French section. Harald Caldwell of Carapolis has been named north country YMCA secretary and Camp Huckins director. Leo Boutchie, 17, of Malden died when a jack slipped while repairing a car. Bishop Thomas F. Lillis, 77, longtime Kansas City Diocese head since 1918, died. In Dunellen, First Methodist's Young People’s League hires a professional lecturer for a four talk romance series starting January 5 with a session on dates and dating.
New York reports strength in aircraft and rail stocks lifting leading issues beyond two points at times with several new yearly highs. After midday profit taking trimmed gains as initial brisk trading slowed in a market still showing vigor.
Four worthless checks totaling 95 dollars were passed to merchants during the holiday rush. The checks, signed C. H. Hopkins and made payable to E. J. Gelinas, were cashed after the culprits showed Gelinas' stolen driving license, automobile registration, and birth certificate. The documents were reported stolen from Gelinas' car in Melrose, Massachusetts two weeks earlier.
Boston reports Capt. Augustus Landry of the trawler Boston pulled up a piece of an old wreck from Brown's Banks off Nova Scotia. The object could not be identified but was believed to be part of a French bark. It was removed without damage to the trawls and returned to the sea.
A Newington youth told police that his stepfather set a fire. Authorities allege arson and report ongoing investigation with charges to be filed. The incident follows a separate crash on Studebaker Hill at Little Boar's Head.
Charles J. Samchuck, a 1B year old from Newington, signed a confession to starting a 35,000 blaze that destroyed his mother's property. He implicated stepfather Steve Pickielak, 48, who pleaded not guilty and was held on 1500 bail. Arson investigations implicate both in a wave of crimes centered in Newington.
Jarvus R. Gardner is transferred to this city by the Public Works Administration to serve as resident engineer inspector for PWA projects including the Deer Island bridge near Ellsworth Me. W. Dickinson remains as traveling inspector handling bids and start of work and will visit frequently. Gardner will reside here once an apartment is found with an office in the First National Bank building behind the Bridge Authority. Larkin of Harrington Cortelyou will join as associate engineer supervising plans for the structure.
Chester Burt twenty two of North Attleboro drowned after he and companion Ellen Lapoint Attleboro fell through ice at Cooper's ice pond off Pleasant street. Burt’s body was still missing early today as rescue efforts continued with George and living Sargent assisting in Attleboro.
Washington AP Dec 2 The Board of Tax Appeals relieved Israel Blake of a 3873 income tax assessment after ruling his Newport VI stock farm operated as a business, not a hobby, despite losses from 1922 to 1933. Blake, a New York City resident, ran the farm with J H Gaines until 1929. Gaines died that year. The board reversed IRS deductions of 10489 in 1932 and 8532 in 1933, noting farm records showed profit in fact.
A half dozen bills prepared by the incoming Legislature have been sent to the printer by Secretary of State Enoch D. Fuller. He recalled a painter license bill and another to modify motor vehicle registration chants. Bills can be filed in advance, but few appear before the General Court convenes.
Special to The Herald reports Gov Francis B Murphy and council granted a two months reprieve to Howard Long, convicted slayer of Mark Neville Jensen, who faced execution at the State Prison after midnight tonight. The reprieve postpones the hanging two months.
Concord, Dec. 29 (AP) The state prepared to distribute 733,615 in taxes on income from interest and dividends collected this year to cities and towns. Manchester will receive 111,084 Portsmouth 384,414 Keene 23,599 Nashua 860,760 Daver 15,030 Concord 53,102 Laconia 20,065.
