Boston Sets Record Low Temperature Across City

A brutal cold snap hit Boston at 8 o clock in the morning driving the temperature to 18 degrees below zero, the lowest in 63 years. The cold stretched to New Hampshire and northern states with readings ranging from 20 to 30 below in towns like Tilton and Concord. The Winnepesaukee River froze for the first time in memory, and a stiff wind worsened conditions with many areas reporting single digit readings.

Record cold in Portsmouth drives temps to 24 below

The city awoke to the coldest morning on record with readings from 24 to 28 below in the business section and lower at scattered sites. Plumbers and garage workers battled the chill as cars struggled to start while buses and trains mostly ran, and harbors remained ice free.

Revolt in Argentina Leaves Dozens Dead in Two Cities

Buenos Ayres reports a radical uprising in Rosario and Santa Fe with at least 20 dead and about 100 wounded. Authorities say 300 to 500 arrests were made to quell the revolt after radical conventions rejected participating in the March one third Chamber election. Censorship on telegraph prevented details.

Government spokesmen said the country was quiet while disturbances flared in La Plata and Santa Fe with crowds clashing with police. In Buenos Aires fifty red banded demonstrators were arrested as authorities claimed the movement in the capital had been broken and order would return.

Federal grant eyed for Hampton sea wall plan

Reports from Washington indicate the Federal Government approved a 71,000 grant to fund a sea wall at Hampton and an 8,000 loan to Littleton for sidewalks. State House officials said confirmation had not yet been received.

Civil Works Administration hires 1113 in Rockingham district

The Civil Works Administration has employed 1113 people in Rockingham County under the Portsmouth City Hall office led by Re-employment Director Graves. About 50 projects are active including forestry, road, park, school repairs, Navy Yard work, and mosquito control with 333 workers in Portsmouth and additional crews at Fort Constitution and Elwyn Road and Langdon Park projects.

Fire Destroys Water Street Elevator Shaft at Alan-Rogers Plant

In sub zero weather a fire at the Alan Rogers wood working plant on Water Street in Laconia last night spread to the elevator shaft. Fireman Wilfred Boulsy was hospitalized for burns and smoke inhalation. The blaze was spotted by patrolman Norman Drouin and confined to the shaft with $2000 damage. The building, recently moved to Laconia by the Alan Rogers Corporation, is insured.

Seven Rescued From Flames In Boston Duplex Fire

Seventeen people were carried down ladders as temperatures dropped to ten below zero while fire swept a three story brick duplex on North Common Street. Two alarms sounded as firefighters battled the blaze before being treated for exposure. Damages estimated at $15,000.
