U S warplanes hit targets in North Vietnam for the third day as Radio Hanoi reports one more jet downed and claims five F4 Phantoms shot down on Sunday. U S loss tallies remain unconfirmed amid new strikes and stalled peace talks in Paris.
In Belfast, the British Army distributed thousands of leaflets to parents warning that children playing with toy guns in troubled streets could be killed. The Army cites children as young as five or six playing a game called Am bush with plastic weapons and replicas of a Thompson submachine gun. A second American brigade in South Vietnam began withdrawal preparations as announced by U.S. Command in Saigon.
The National Safety Council forecasts 400 to 500 fatalities in traffic accidents during the New Year’s Day holiday weekend in a 78 hour period starting 6 p.m. Thursday and ending midnight Sunday, following 614 deaths in the Christmas weekend.
Vermont State Police report a 15 year old boy from McLean Virginia named Charles Markham was found at Bromley Ski area in Rutland after a statewide search. Police searched Vermont's 20 major ski areas hoping to locate him as officials suspected spinal meningitis.
New Hampshire unemployment climbed to 4.7 percent after weeks at 4.5 percent as 400 people joined the jobless rolls last week. Regions hit include Manchester and Berlin Concord Claremont Laconia Nashua and Portsmouth. A 15 year old from North Windham, David Carleton, was killed Monday night when the borrowed snowmobile struck a wharf near Pettingill Pond in Windham. He was thrown from the machine as it approached the shoreline, according to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Game.
In Key Biscayne Florida President Nixon and West German Chancellor Willy Brandt opened a summit focused on broad world issues. Officials said meetings would exchange views on East West relations and Western alliance roles with little expectation of dramatic or specific agreements.

James P Healy long time Portsmouth tax collector died at Portsmouth Hospital aged 56 after illness. He was appointed February 8 1957 by former City Manager Robert C Violette succeeding J Warren Somerby. A native of Portsmouth he was active in golf serving as Portsmouth Country Club president 1952 1953 and as director for 10 years. He attended St Patrick's School and Portsmouth High School class of 1933. He is survived by his widow.
