Ottawa dispatch reports 1930 navigation season to open with a flying base at Port Menier on Anticosti Island. Patrol planes will seek liquor runners and relay positions to the government preventive service to counter illegal landings by rum smugglers who have used aircraft to outmaneuver authorities.
Fire on the fifth floor of the Granite State Tanner y Company on Fairmount street caused about 20000 in damage last evening. Automatic sprinklers melted and flooded the third and fourth floors soaking hundreds of finished hides and damaging leather destined for kid gloves and other goods. Firefighters reached the scene after a mile long run as flames roared through the roof on the south side. Captain Whitney said sprinklers prevented greater spread and reduced heat.

Fred Jones of 6 Russell Street was treated for a broken left wrist at Portsmouth Hospital on Friday after an injury sustained while playing basketball.
From Fairbanks Alaska December reports say Soviet authorities will send three more airplanes to join three already pledged to hunt the Americans Carl Ben Bielson and il Borland near North Cape Siberia. The planes, shipped from Seattle on the Coast Guard cutter Chelan, are to join Canadian pilots and may depart soon across the Bering Strait. Radio communications indicate no disruption as auxiliary gear is readied.
In Beckley West Virginia on December 28 two engineers age 27 and 20 died in a gas pocket explosion at the CG G B Smoke less Cog Company mine near Sistes bury eight miles away. Twelve other miners escaped after rescue crews reached the scene. The mine, employing about 200 men, was heavily rock dusted to curb blast spread and gas. Miners initially barricaded in a passageway until ventilators cleared the area and they walked out to safety.
