Ambuscade Near Degenderyn On Dec 2 Reported

Details from South Attica describe an ambush near Degenderyn in the Orange River colony. Two hundred mounted infantry faced three hundred Boers and forty natives led by Commandant Britz. British losses were ten killed and fifteen wounded. Boer losses unknown.

Foolish Marine Arrested for Forgery in Washington

Corporal George L. Norre of the Marine Corps is under arrest at the Marine barracks for allegedly forging the name of Frank W. Hackett former assistant secretary of the navy to a 288 dollar check drawn on Riggs National Bank. The signature was scrutinized by the cashier and Norre fled the bank in alarm. He cited inability to meet expenses with a monthly pay of 37.50 dollars. He had been detailed as an orderly for Hackett who valued him enough to promote him to corporal.

Uvalde Asphalt Firm Wins Havana Pavement Contract

J H Bridges, president of the Uvalide Asphalt Company, awarded a Havana Cuba contract for laying pavements and sewers valued at 12 million dollars. The project is projected to take five years to complete.

Police Court Arraigns Rose Colson for Disorderly House

On Friday at 3, Rose Colson pleaded guilty before Judge Samuel W. Emery to keeping a disorderly house. A suspended sentence was offered, but the judge imposed 19 dollars fine and 8.44 dollars costs, to be enforced Tuesday. James Wyer then faced the court for drunkenness, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to six months at Brentwood county farm with 5.36 dollars costs.

Rye Cottage Burglary At Judge Richardson’s Home

The rye cottage of Judge James A Richardson near Wentworth House bridge was broken into last week. Intruders removed a heavy window shutter and smashed a window to gain entry.
