Sergeant Sides of an armored tank battalion died in Germany at age 35. He enlisted in 1940 and had been in service until March of this year. A son of Herminn Sidon, he hailed from 428 Middle Street and had lived in New York for several years prior to joining the service.

An army censor in Philadelphia on December 27 sent a festive note to Sherry Betches via Pvt. Frederick Lake. The letter explains that overseas service disrupted Christmas shopping plans and includes a humorous Boss script urging preparations for a present from Freddie.
In New York City many butcher shops closed during a protest against OPA rules citing no ceiling on liver prices. Police reported 2,135 of 6,020 shops, about 21 percent, were closed as of yesterday amid continued store holdups and anticipated further closings by delis and meat retailers seeking more available prepared products.
City Clerk Edward J. Hopley testifies in superior court as part of his suit against the Portsmouth Herald and publisher J D Hertford. He says the Herald editorial caused him to hesitate about running for office and notes a change in public attitude. He explains he had no role in election checklist preparation and confirms some ward checklists were altered. Jury members are named and cross examination set for this afternoon.

Four persons burned to death in a dramatic general alarm blaze at 19 Everett Avenue Chelsea Mass. Three others may be trapped as firemen fought flames through a three story brick block near Chelsea Square. Fire Chief Voke estimated losses at over 850000 with Boston Everett Malden Revere and Winthrop aiding. One body identified as Isaac Stein 70. Injured include James Kalin 15 Leon Crocker 7A and Nathan Weiner 53.
Best estimates from election officials place the service vote in the recent presidential race at around 2 800 000. This is far below the 3 392 000 estimated by state officers prior to the Nov 7 election as likely to be cast but still a larger percentage of the service strength than in the 1942 congressional elections.
Mrs Dondero tops Mr Brown by seven after a recount in Portsmouth. Recount totals show Dondero 2117 to Brown 2110, after original counts of 2137 to 2129. Sanborn edged Whalen by 34 in a separate council recount. Mrs Dondero will be Portsmouth’s first female mayor and has long served in state and local government.
Three persons were killed and 18 injured when bombs fell on the Paris area near landmarks. It was Paris first air raid since Aug 27 after liberation. Casualties occurred in a house in several wards with additional damage to nearby buildings.
The Regional Office of Price Administration asks housewives to destroy blue red and sugar ration stamps invalidated by a government order. Some stamps were still being accepted by retailers, with 10 days to a month for coupon redemption. An OPA spokesman warned some stamps may enter the black market, but no crackdown is planned. they appeal to public patriotism.
Emerson Hovey Post 168 VFW urged Portsmouth as a possible site for a veterans hospital. E H Tripp of the Veterans Administration promised careful consideration, noting Portsmouth advantages and sites inspected earlier by Major Metz during his visit.
Concord December report says Governor Blood works on his message to the incoming legislature set for next Wednesday morning, the day he retires after four years in office. He is expected to outline new legislation and review his administration. State Comptroller Bean is compiling data for the administration review. Elect Charles M. Dale is prepping for his inaugural address next Thursday morning.
AP report says General Theodore Geib, commander of a German army group, died of head wounds from the western front. Berlin radio described him as an artillery officer who held his command shortly before being fatally wounded.
