Clarence Sanborn headmaster of Portsmouth High School is named a member of Local Board No. 29 Portsmouth Selective Service System in New Hampshire. The appointment fills the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles M. Dale former chairman of the local board, announced today by Brigadier General Charles F. Bowen, state director.

Britain declares war on Bulgaria on December 13

London disclosed today that Britain has been at war with Bulgaria since December 13. The war notice appeared in a supplement to the London Gazette after Germany and Italy declared war on the United States and the U S declared war on Germany and Italy. Britain said it had not been officially informed of Bulgaria's declaration.

Navy warns mined approaches to Portsmouth Harbor

The Navy department in Washington warned shipping that areas near Portsmouth harbor have been mined. The advisory followed a general hydrographic notice about obstructions or mines at harbor entrances. Vessels must not enter ports without permission or instructions from harbor station or patrol vessels.

Enemy planes strike Manila in long raid killing many

Japanese two motor bombers pummeled Manila for over two hours targeting government buildings a church a fire station and a college. The Commonwealth building and a hospital area suffered direct hits as fires lit the city. NBC said the city glowed red from fires and waves of 38 planes moved over Manila Bay toward Corregidor.

Seabrook Man Held In $5,000 In Shooting Case

Charles M. Cilley, 45, a Seabrook woodchopper, is jailed on $5,000 bail after arraignment for aggravated assault in Seabrook municipal court. He pleaded not guilty to shooting Perley Fogg, 44, of Seabrook, who was taken to Mitchell Memorial hospital in Brentwood with a knee wound and reported in favorable condition.

Drivers Escape In Interstate Junction Truck Crash

Two trucks collided at the Woodbury Avenue by pass intersection with the Interstate bridge. Drivers B. T. Fellman of Nottingham and Hollis Lord Jr. of South Windham Me escaped serious injury and rested at Portsmouth hospital. Lord drove a University Overland Express Co vehicle used for transporting automobiles. Both trucks were badly damaged. The crash was investigated by State Motor Vehicle Inspector Kennard E. Goldsmith and City Marshall Leonard H. Hewitt.
