A $25,000 libel suit filed by City Clerk Edward J. Hopley against the Portsmouth Herald and publisher J. D. Hartford is set for tomorrow at 10 o'clock in Rockingham county court house Portsmouth before Chief Justice A Thornton Lorimer. Attorneys requested early trial to allow Hopley to depart for U S maritime service. The action stems from an editorial alleging violation of state primary and election laws over unsigned voter checklists.
The OPA announced tighter rationing effective today with butter up to 24 cents a pound and many stamps canceled. Rev. James H. Brennan longtime rector of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Portsmouth died Sunday night at the parochial residence. Born November 7 1869 in Rochester he studied at Aix Holy Cross College and Grand Seminary Montreal before his ordination in 1894. He served St Joseph Cathedral Manchester and Holy Trinity Somersworth before coming to Portsmouth in 1925. His work included rectory construction chapel redecoration and adding a high school year at St Patrick’s Parochial school. He helped raise funds for the new church with a dollar monthly pledge from parish workers. Continued on Page Three.
