A Merry Christmas in Portsmouth saw little sickness and widespread cheer. Neighbors helped those in need with gifts from organizations and individuals while homecomings brought many sons and daughters back. Charities cared well for the less fortunate and no serious accidents occurred amid festive happiness.
A early today fire at the Mew Court Hotel in Springfield traps guests and residents. Four people die as flames roar through the five story building. Fire crews struggle against high winds and fear of collapse while many escape from upper floors. Police fear more victims amid the blaze and search continues.
Tokyo December 26 Japan will issue a formal reply to the latest diplomatic communication about Chinchow. A lengthy Manchuria policy statement will accompany the reply and be delivered tomorrow to the ambassadors of the United States Great Britain and others. The government stresses efforts to avoid hostilities while hoping non forceful removal of the lawless element in the area.
Firemen at the Central Fire Station prepared and renewed toys for Obsimay Day. About 2000 toys, saved from earlier repairs, were delivered to 800 families with help from a Frank H. Brooks truck and volunteer deliverers spreading Christmas spirit.

Christmas at the Wentworth Home on Masdy went softly as the annual party had been held midweek. A turkey dinner was served to chronic invalids and the Home family, with efforts to keep the day cheery despite the subdued mood.

Ellsmere Whitten of Greenland is at Portsmouth hospital with a compound fracture of the leg after a car struck a cable while unloading coal at Consolidation Corp. Co. Frank Trotsie, who was assisting, also suffered bruises but returned home after treatment.
Forty eight prisoners at the Rockingham county jail enjoyed a Christmas dinner yesterday aided by Christmas boxes and papers from the Salvation Army. The menu included roast pork with dressing mashed potatoes boiled onion mashed squash cranberry sauce apple mince pie and coffee. The St Johns parish annual meeting to elect wardens officers and vestry will be held Monday evening January 4 at the Danish House on Stave Street.
The Christmas pageant titled They That Sit in Darkness will be repeated Sunday morning at 0.30. Carols and the pageant will be given Sunday evening at 7.30 at the Friendly Church on Wanover Street.

Landry was treated at Portsmouth Hospital. Landry pleaded guilty to reckless driving after police court Rite tery fined $10 and costs by Judge Juscitt H. Shaw.
