The three member panel would include two lawyers and a labor commissioner as secretary. If parties disagree on payments, the commission could assign a member for hearing and decision with final outcomes subject to Supreme Court review on legal questions.
A Wells Christmas Eve candlelight service is held at 11 PM at Highpine Baptist Church under Richard Hatch. Participants include youth from Wells Branch Freewill Baptist and North Berwick Baptist. University of Maine students Rodney Hatch and Lorraine Perry read and sing, with Barbara Wicks and Thomas Mithen sharing testimonies. Holy Communion and a 7:30 PM caroling event precede a social hour after the service.

A gunman robbed Mrs Linden’s store in Portland of 50 dollars on Tuesday night and an hour later three masked robbers took 56 dollars. She shut the shop and said she’s moving to a quieter place with television halts.

Cary William Nickels arrived at his restaurant with 300 hot rolls and faced a jammed front door. After breaking a wine window and smashing a balloon door he entered the dining room and found the front door still stuck. Police traced the missing crate to a city garbage truck where the rolls were mangled.

Federal mediators report progress toward ending a 35 day old deliverers strike in New York City. Talks continue with publishers and union negotiators focusing on a 33 hour week, paid holidays, vacations, and sick leave.
Patrolman Roland Butch Smart, a 60 year old veteran of 35 years with the Portsmouth police, has left his Market Square post due to a badly swollen left ankle. He plans a Boston visit next week to see a bone specialist and hopes to return soon. He misses the square and its people during this time. The notice adds Dr Maurice Dinnerman’s office will close December 24 to 27.
