Loss of Grayling submarine announced by Navy
Washington report states the Portsmouth built Grayling is overdue and presumed lost since the start of the war. The 475 ton submarine, launched September 4 1940, was in commission by February 1947 and fought in the Pacific against Japan. The loss raises American warships sunk since December 7 1941 to 133. Next of kin have been notified. Commander Robert M Brinker, 30, of Chicago led the Grayling with a crew of about 65.

Farmer Goodwin Dies After Bus Collision in Kittery
Goodwin, a lifelong Eliot resident born March 21 1878, was struck seven hours earlier by a Boston and Maine Transportation Co bus turning into Wyman avenue near the dispensary. He died from a fractured skull at the scene. An autopsy by Medical Examiner Dr. Charles W. Kinghorn confirmed the injuries. He is survived by wife Mary A Manning Goodwin a son Daniel Albert Goodwin Jr of Kittery three daughters Mrs Joseph Lyman of Portland and Mrs Walter Staples of Laconia three brothers Ellridge Pred and Frank and four sisters.
