Franceszek Umilian was electrocuted in Charlestown prison at 12 25 am after a trial over the Jedrusek murder in Granby New Hampshire. The case centered on a farm dispute and alleged threats over a forbidden marriage. Rosa Keith was not prosecuted and witnesses described heated quarrels between Umilian and Jedrusek.
In Hampshire County on Oct 5 1900 Amillan faced trial for the first murder in the county. Lord Kitchener’s despatch from Johannesburg dated December 24 describes sharp combats in the Orange River and Transvaal. Boer forces attacked British detachments near Begin ferry and at Langberr while Doewet’s attack drove back Generals Thartwell and Campbell, with significant British casualties and Boer prisoners taken.
London reports sharp fighting in the Orange River colony with three engagements. Casualties total about 150, divided equally. Heavy British losses occurred in the Transvaal, though full figures are not yet reported.
