Armed Robbers Steal Payroll of $13 518 in Roxbury

Three bandits stopped a payroll car carrying Morris Gordon and Michael Alpern in Roxbury after obtaining funds from a bank. They forced the car to halt with a pursuing vehicle, then seized the money and a pistol before fleeing in a waiting car.

Jonesport Fire Destroys School and Lodge Building

Fire tonight destroyed a three story building in Jonesport housing the high school and Masonic and Eastern Star lodge rooms with an estimated loss of 40000. Rescue crews from East Machias and Cherryfield could not reach due to heavy snow but local volunteers confined the blaze and saved records. Brief Session of Governor and Council in Concord

The Governor and Council met briefly at the State House in Concord on a Friday morning to approve war warrants. Councilors Brackett Murphy Roy attended to enable salaries for store employees before Christmas. MacLeod was fully present while Carroll remained home due to illness. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday with important matters on the agenda.

Christmas Mail Volume Tops Last Year at Portsmouth

Christmas mail passing through the Portsmouth Post Office shows a 26,600 piece increase over last year with 181,900 pieces cancelled in the past seven days compared to 155,300 previously. The force uses four substitutes and eleven temporary workers with routes covered by assistants. the office closes tonight for holiday observances, and special delivery items will still be received and delivered Sunday and Monday.
