A Christmas season message extols American generosity with widespread charity. It notes hundreds of thousands of gift baskets will be distributed nationwide containing food garments toys and shoes. The piece urges readers to sacrifice for the less fortunate and declares no one should be forgotten.
Newport December 23 A fire at the rear of the wooden Hotel Winston on Newport's main street forced more than 20 guests to flee in scanty attire. One guest, Sidney G Whittemore, suffered three broken ribs while helping a fireman with a ladder. The thermometer neared zero as the blaze started around 12 15 a m as owner Cleo Franklin saw flames from the kitchen area. The official damage was estimated at sixteen thousand dollars.
The Chinese steamer Lee Cheong sank off Swabue during a violent storm after departure for Hong Kong. All on board are believed dead, with only two seamen rescued from wreckage. 250 passengers and crew were aboard including many women and children.

A snow covered runway left a tri motor airliner from Trans Continental One crashing during landing at Strout Field Indianapolis. D. C. Law of Philadelphia died from a skull fracture and two others were injured.
Paintsville, Ky. two gun men from the mountains clashed on Main street during a Christmas shopping rush. Patrolman Jess Dills was killed, Joe Castle died of wounds after exchanging shots with two .45 caliber pistols. Dills died instantly. Castle succumbed at a hospital.

An airplane carrying Capt. Herbert H. Partridge of New York diverted to a forced landing two miles south of Biddeford Saturday night due to fuel shortage. The craft landed in a small field without guidance lights, but the landing was nearly flawless and no one was injured. Partridge and pilot H. B. Fisher continued to Belfast by automobile after a slight plane damage.

Five persons were injured, some seriously, when two Union Pacific passenger trains collided a mile east of Gorham Kansas this morning. All injured were trainmen. no passengers were hurt. Mrs. Mabel Dixon of Cass street leaves for Last Breezes Far Sweden Me to spend the holidays with cousin Mrs. Guy Tower, formerly Miss Wy Méne Brown.
