Decorations arrive later this year yet prove worth the wait as nearly every house glows with wreaths and outdoor illuminations. City strolls after dark thrill residents and visitors, with many travelers noting the festive display as they head home to upstate Maine.
The 126th anniversary of Portsmouth Engine No 2 of the Fire Department was celebrated at the Central Fire Station with banquet speeches and entertainment. Chief W F Woods Mayor J F Pickering Rear Admiral C S Krempit and Col J A Rossel spoke on the history and service of the company and the spirit of cooperation sustaining it.

A general strike by delivery and transportation workers in Philadelphia idled about 27,000 employees, threatening to cripple Christmas deliveries across multiple lines of business. Nine allied unions including bakery, drivers, piano movers, milk drivers, Gleanne and dyers, railway express drivers, and Brotherhood Transportation workers joined the action.
Vincent Taccetta of Coleman & Taccetta reports from Detroit after a day at the General Motors Proving Ground. He and other dealers saw the new Chevrolet models and learned plans for the coming year including knee action front wheels and a smooth ride on rough roads. Dealers expect a strong year as public announcement nears and a nationwide business stimulus grows.
Following a call by union leaders, men picketed Philadelphia Rapid Transit car barns to sway trolley workers to join the strike. The action sprang from a dispute between PRT operators and taxi companies and their drivers. Dr William M Leiserson urged restraint as the National Labor Board previously ordered the taxi drivers to halt. The strike, in sympathy with taxi drivers, faced delays as the company showed willingness to reinstate some strikers while warning against violence and enforcing a selective return.
The Civil Works Administration program to repaint and renovate interiors of Portsmouth schoolhouses has started at Beaven Farragut and Lafayette schools. About 30 workers now, rising to 40 as work expands to other schools. Fred A. Gray oversees with three foremen per site. Around 8000 dollars funds the project to renovate interiors of all local school buildings.
The New York stock market opened with a silver driven rally led by the metal group. Stocks jumped 1 to 10 as silver futures surged on news of silver being elevated as a monetary base. Major miners and related shares led gains, while some industrials and utilities posted smaller advances before profit taking cooled the market.
A tentative schedule shows the U S Navy concentrating virtually all fighting strength on the Atlantic coast next summer. An armada of 110 surface vessels, the dirigible Macon and about 300 aircraft would depart from California on a six month cruise starting April 8. The Salvation Army is organizing Christmas dinners for needy families.
The 19th Regiment's annual drill moves from Rye Beach to New Castle after the Federal government approves a New Hampshire use pact. Governor Winant and Adjutant General Charles Howard praised the plan, which centers on 35 acres of Wendell property between Forts Constitution and Stark for the 187th Coast Artillery summer tour and recreation use.
Customs patrols seized two ten van trucks of rye whiskey and other liquor valued around 30 000 dollars on Lafayette road. Four New York City men Joseph Selmanovicz Abraham Lisberman Lewis Kaplan and David Sikowitz were arrested. Trucks owned by I Mun theinci and Apex Transfer Co. Liquor from St Pierre West Indies likely landed from a rum fleet off Rising coast. Arraignment scheduled before Commissioner Barnard at Manchester.
