Quick Freeze War Controls Nearly Ready

Washington officials say President Truman may send a separate message to Congress by mid January outlining a rapid freeze plan. The legislation would empower the president to impose price and wage freezes, halt job shifts, impose excess profits taxes, ration scarce goods, and seize vital industries if a foreign attack occurs, with broad manpower controls but not full labor seizure. The National Labor Relations Board staff has provided a tentative draft to Truman and cabinet members.

Merrow to Meet With Businessmen on Harbor Needs

U S Rep Chester E Merrow to discuss Portsmouth harbor and Piscataqua River needs with local industrialists at the Rockingham hotel on Wednesday. House un American activities committee races to determine today if the justice department will allow eight key witnesses to be questioned before year end. The panel seeks to add testimony to espionage inquiry reports before Congress opens on Jan. 3. Supreme Court Lets Tojo Case Stand and Death Sentences

The Supreme Court, in a 6-1 decision, refused to intervene in the 11 nation tribunal that condemned former Prime Minister Tojo and six other Japanese warlords to death. The court said it had no authority over the tribunal and rejected appeals to review or reverse the sentences. General MacArthur had confirmed the sentences but stayed executions pending the high court ruling.

Ice Tragedy Strikes Salmon Falls Skating Party

In Salmon Falls, 14 year old Robert Dedier drowned after breaking through thin ice on the river while skating with two companions. Richard Dover, 10, and Edgar Crateau, 13, were involved in the rescue attempt. Dover saved Crateau, but Dedier remained beneath the icy water as rescuers chopped through the ice to reach him.

Ex-Hotel Worker Held in $1,000 On Forgery Count

A 29 year old Northampton man formerly at Camp Langdon New Castle was held on 1000 bail for the April grand jury in Portsmouth municipal court. James V Castagno pleaded guilty to forging a 120 check on Wentworth Hotel Inc using the president James B Smith signature. He was returned from Palm Beach Florida by Sheriff Frink and Deputy Osgood after passing four other checks totaling nearly 400 in local businesses. Castagno employed at the Hotel Wentworth last summer waived examination and probable cause found.

Fire Destroys Farm Poultry Complex in Fremont Blaze

Four fire departments battled a pre-dawn snowstorm to quell a blaze at the Kingston road Pettengill poultry farm in Fremont. A barn, 500 chickens, a brooder stove, a truck, an automobile and a cow were lost. Firefighters from Exeter Brentwood Kingston and Fremont faced treacherous roads eight miles to reach the scene. The origin of the blaze could not be determined. a new brooder stove may have posed a hazard but was not installed.

Two Youths Rescued After All-Night Snow Search

Two youths Roger Gauthier age 19 of Epping and William Popham 21 of Haverhill were rescued at 2 30 am by Epping Police Chief Edward Lavoie after a 12 hour exposure in Spruce Swamp during a search for a Christmas tree. The pair, cold and hungry, no longer in possession of the tree, were reported unharmed.

One Youth Hurt Three Shaken Up In Durham Crash
