East Rochester December 14 Fire destroyed the cottage Mrs. Andrew Weymouth planned to return to from Frisbie Memorial Hospital with her infant son. Weymouth, a woodsman, was working nearby at Greenfield when brothers lit a living room stove to aid her homecoming. Firemen prevented spread to a woods area and a barn and shed.
Eight people were injured in a six vehicle crash on Lafayette Road between Baxakeet Falls and North Hampton. The collision began when a car driven by Mrs. Jessie Strout rear ended an army truck, trapping her passenger under the vehicle. Several injured were transported to Portsmouth and Exeter hospitals.
Washington reports UNRRA is authorized to draw 1.35 billion dollars from the U S treasury, raising the total U S contribution to 2.7 billion. Senators Connally and Vandenberg, who backed U N participation, say they would act differently if starting over. Knowland suggests a separate relief body for China and the Far East.
Mayor Malcolm E Barney announced a city survey with Ralph Smith, chairman of the economic development committee. The report estimates $2,330,600 will be spent on public and private construction as materials and labor become more available in Laconia.

Navy machinist mate James J Cer Jandes reaffirmed his intention to support his wife Hose 23 charged with murder in the death of their six month old son Ronald. The infant was found dead wedged beneath a built in cabinet at the family home after a 16 day search sparked by her claim the boy had been kidnapped. The wife is confined to a Boston psychiatric hospital for observation. Police say she admitted the child died November 24 while at a party in an upstairs flat four days before she reported the kidnapping. Investigators continue to seek clues for the case.
Santa Claus appeared in Portsmouth this afternoon after hiding in plain clothes. He met with local youngsters who had clamored for his presence and was spotted near the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, which had joined The Portsmouth Herald in the search. Six year old Robert Brewster of 43 Atkinson Street was struck by a government vehicle in Portsmouth. He suffered a fractured right leg and head injuries when he dashed in front of the vehicle operated by Miles J. Edwards of Augusta Maine. Police report his condition improved at Portsmouth Hospital.
