President Hoover sought congressional prompt action on his program, winning assurances from key leaders that a moratorium and $100,000,000 federal land bank credit increase would likely pass the House before Christmas. The plan aims to unlock an $800,000,000 reconstruction effort, with Republican and Democratic leaders pledging cooperation in urgent economic legislation. Representatives Carter, Rainey, Snell, Hawley, Treadwell, Collier, Crisp, Stewart, Brand, Lustron, Strong attended the conference.
In Kansas City the kidnapping of Nelly Donnelly and chauffeur George Blair ended after nearly 20 hours when the duo were freed by their captors near an elite bridge. The case involved a $75,000 ransom demand and extensive police search led by L. M. Siegfried as investigators confirm money changing hands.
Three members of John Wesala family were rescued from a burning two story house in Sagamore Massachusetts. They climbed to a porch roof on fright clothing and a neighbor with a ladder helped them down safely. The fire destroyed swelling furnishings valued at five thousand dollars. A beetle infestation caused roof damage at Westminster Hall requiring extensive repairs.
A large fire destroyed the MacNicol Packing Co sardine canning plant in Eastport Maine causing about 209900 dollars in damage. David MacNicol vice president says the blaze may have been caused maliciously or accidentally. The factory housed a capacity of 150090 cases per year and was closed since October. Embers from the burning structure spread, threatening nearby buildings before flames were controlled.
Malihart Leshen of 124 Olive Street New Haven Conn was arrested on the State Highway in Kittery for allegedly transporting 45 gallons of alcohol in one gallon cans in a car claimed to be owned by Leng Air Service of New Haven. State Police Officer Ernest Hasson presented him to Bail Commissioner Elmer Burnham for an appearance before Judge Justin Henry Shaw in Kittery. The charge is unlawful bringing intoxicating liquor into the state without permit.
Washington December 18 President Hoover renominated Balphas ter H Myer and William Lee to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Myer a world authority on railroad transportation has served 21 years on the commission. Lee was appointed last year to fill the unexpired term of J B Campbell who resigned.
Gale along the Pacific coast yesterday roared into Oregon and Washington, causing a crash that blocked highways and interrupted communications. One life was lost in the storm near Puget Sound as officials investigated the wreck and sought to restore safe travel.
Detailing heavy rainfall and rising rivers in northern Mississippi and Eldorado Arkansas, the report notes Kenova and nearby areas flooded, crops ruined, oil wells halted, and transport disrupted as Yazoo and other rivers rise. Nearly 15 inches of rain fell in Eldorado over nine weeks.
Lieut John Bradford Griggs Jr of the Fort Portsmouth Navy Yard Industrial Department is detached to fit out the new submarine Dolphin and will command it when commissioned in July or August. He formerly commanded K-2 S-16 and 8-18 and hails from Elizabeth City North Carolina, appointed June 17, 1915. No successor is named for the Industrial Department.
Nanking dispatch reports the government moved with troops to end student demonstrations. Large units rounded up students, escorted them to trains, and sent them to homes in North China cities and Shanghai. The operation brought relief as doors to further disorder closed.
Albany reports the murder of 36 year old gangster chief Jack Legs Diamond who was shot in a rooming house at 67 Cove Street minutes after a party celebrating his acquittal on a kidnapping charge. Police questioned two women and a taxi driver connected to the suspect, while Diamond’s widow Mrs. Diamond sobbed.
