Camp Devens in Ayer fights to arrange special train service to allow draftees to return home for Christmas. Railroads hesitate to provide extra accommodation, risking many troops missing holidays. Quarantines affect several artillery regiments with measures to prevent spread of illness.
Washington reports plans to train 54 009 men for merchant marines aboard training ships from coastal ports. Recruitment spans the county with standard pay of 40 dollars monthly plus room and board, no seafaring experience required, as new enlistees join duty service progressively.
