Portsmouth High School students craft unique gingerbread houses

Diane Pinkham guides Level 2 culinary arts students to design their own gingerbread houses without templates. Projects include traditional homes, a barn and silo, Eiffel Tower, McDonald’s, lighthouses, log cabins, a country store, and more. Brendan Webster even recreates his Greenland home with fit roof challenges. Becca Connell’s country store features a wagon of pumpkins and a rock candy chimney.

Tax counts against Kozlowski dropped by judge

A Manhattan judge dismissed all state tax evasion charges against L. Dennis Kozlowski former Tyco International chairman after prosecutors said he had satisfied a restitution agreement. Kozlowski now in state prison has paid 97.7 million in restitution and 21.2 million in delinquent taxes, prompting dismissal under the agreement. Justice Michael Obus called the resolution appropriate noting sales and income taxes have been collected.

Agencies warn of at least $1 million HIV aid cut

Anne Rugg of AIDS Response Seacoast warns Portsmouth agencies serving people with HIV AIDS face a $1 million federal funding reduction by March 1 2007. Three of five New Hampshire providers would lose two thirds of last year's federal support, harming patients workers and policymakers fear.

At a city breakfast forum in Portsmouth, AIDS Response-Seacoast warns the $1 million reduction will cost lives. Anne Rugg, the executive director, condemns the cut as rolling back progress and leaving services unfunded. The event runs 8 a.m. Tuesday December 19 in Conference Room A at Portsmouth City Hall.

Man shot by Taser may sue the city

Michael Dumler, 24, of 215 Washington St., says he was knocked into Market Street by a Jeep and then tased, receiving no medical care beyond the taser. Police say he was intoxicated when officers attempted protective custody after a “wrestling match.” Dumler faces disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges. Witness Sean Sanga recalls seeing him step into the road and hit his head after bouncing off the Jeep.

Weathervane Tops North Church Restore Progress and Hopes

The North Church steeple restoration nears completion as the iron weathervane is placed atop the spire. Yet the Market Square Steeple Fund remains about $900,000 short of its $1 million goal with roughly $100,000 still needed by year end. Pettis, the fund chair, urges holiday contributions to show progress and support the landmark’s return to its former state. Delays from a July storm are acknowledged, but work is expected to wrap next week and be publicly unveiled soon thereafter.

Market Square Steeple Restoration Delays Extend Plan

The Market Square Steeple restoration team led by Peter Kinner aims to remove the upper scaffolding by Christmas while scaffolding remains around the bell area. Winter roof work and spring repaint are planned after a spring start and Thanksgiving target. A July storm toppled the spire and scaffolding, with rotted wood causing further delays.
