Retired Rear Admiral R. G. Nicholson closed his active service yesterday after declining the age limit and will enter retirement tomorrow. He began as a cabin boy at age twelve on the warship Slate of Georgia under Captain Fifer and took part in the Wilmington blockade. His final posting was commander of the Asiatic Fleet.
An explosion today at a coast near Nagasaki traps 3200 miners in a coal mine. Rescue efforts continue as reports say 800 workers are believed imprisoned in the mine shaft network near Wakio and Puknoka towns.
