Portsmouth police reveal a long running shoplifting spree by about 30 teen girls from local and Dover stores. Most age around 14, the suspects confessed taking clothing jewelry records cosmetics and various small items. Authorities say no shoplifting ring existed and crime stemmed from peer pressure rather than need.
United Nations diplomats link Peiping protests over 35 Chinese students with the jailing of 11 American fliers on spy charges. Peiping claims U S detention flouts international law while Hammarskjeld pursues a bid to plead for the airmen.
In Cleveland the cross examination of Dr Samuel Sheppard concluded with the state suggesting he killed his wife and injured himself. Sheppard vocally denied the accusation calling it untrue and unfair during the session.
Close to Hammarskjold said he did not expect an immediate answer and expected delays as he weighed Peiping’s move. Sweden and India were viewed as potential intermediaries with missions in Peiping. If no results arose, Hammarskjold might appeal to the Soviet Union for influence amid Kremlin strains over coexistence.
Greek students demonstrate against U S support for Cyprus self determination claims. They pelt the American mission with stones, injuring property as police disperse a crowd of several thousand outside the building with clubs and fire hoses. The U S ambassador Cavendish Connor had informed Athens the United States would not back the request at the U N Assembly.
Bids for about two miles of the Spaulding Turnpike in Dover were to go to the Governor's Council after a bid error changed the apparent low bidder. Morrison-Knudson Construction Co and Landers and Griffin of Portsmouth led initially with 1,069,864.4 dollars. Hinman of North Anson, Maine appeared second before an error pushed Hinman to the low spot by 7,194 dollars.
New Hampshire communities lost 40320 in revenue from the 1954 savings bank tax as banks shifted deposits into tax exempt investments. Payments totaling 93880 will be distributed to towns, far below last year’s 194200. Three large banks paid nothing this year, while 22 of 37 saved on deposits taxes.
Senate Banking Committee staff trimmed a draft blasting housing program irregularities as the worst U.S. scandal and alleging a billion dollars in windfall profits. Democratic balking prompted removal of sharp language while a separate member statement may appear. The eight month probe covers FHA operations with prior scandals noted only in comparison.

A 23 year old government employee was found shot dead in a chain locked room at a fashionable Arlington apartment across the Potomac River. Christmas packages were scattered around the scene. The victim was identified as Sally Wood, formerly of Medfield Massachusetts.
City officials urge extra caution for Safe Driving Day in Portsmouth. The Eisenhower Committee for Highway Safety endorses three rules: follow traffic laws, be courteous to others, and stay focused. City Marshal Betz echoes the appeal citing 788 accidents this year, two fatal, stressing driver pedestrian cooperation to ensure a successful observance.
The Portsmouth School Board committee on schoolhouses will meet with Lt. Col. Andreas A. Andreae to discuss educational facilities as Air Base personnel arrive. The session, set for late month, includes state and federal Education Department officials and City leaders. The board also considers a $200 NHIAA membership for Class A schools to cover tournament expenses.
The Joint Building Committee authorized Raymond Concrete Pile Co of Boston to conduct 21 to 31 test borings at the proposed high school site at a cost ranging 2522 to 31497 dollars. Architect John Brownrigg will supervise at no extra city cost and equipment is due to be set up December 22. The committee reviewed the final contract with Kenneth G Reynolds firm and aims to present a draft for City Council approval January 6.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard plans a full overhaul of the submarine Blenney replacing the cancelled overhaul of the destroyer escort Brough. Captain Cornelius S. Seabring says the switch doubles local workload with about twice the man hours needed for submarine work. If confirmed, the yard gains significant benefit from the substitution.
