Senate Approves Hay Pauncefote Amendment in Exec Session

Washington December 18 The Senate in executive session approved an amendment to the Hay Pauncefote treaty authorizing the United States to defend its interests in the proposed Nicaraguan canal with 65 yeas against 17 nays. The brief debate followed a one hour interval and the doors closed at two o'clock. The day also saw Hanna of Ohio address the Senate for nearly three hours on the subsidy bill, his speech praised by colleagues. In the House the war tax reductions debate continued, with Groover of Ohio HIM of Connecticut and Newland of Nevada among speakers. The general debate will end tomorrow as Jayne expects passage before adjournment. The House also voted for a holiday recess from December 21 to January 3.

Cotter Suicide Suspected After Portland Street Shooting

A man identified as Thomas A Cotter of East Boston was found dying in a lodging house on Portland Street with two bullets in his head. He died at a hospital hours later. A revolver with two empty chambers lay on the floor. Police initially considered murder but now believe Cotter likely killed himself after a spree since Thanksgiving.

GAIL CAR ROBBED ON COTTON BEL NORTHBOUND

A main car on the north bound Cotton Bell passenger train was robbed between Basade’s and this place. Several pouches of registered matter were rifled and packages from Waco to Memphis are missing. Mail clerk John M. Dennis was knocked unconscious and cannot describe the robbers until he regains consciousness. Two men were arrested at Naples Ark on suspicion but no plunder was found.

A passenger boat on the Weet river at Ho Kaw tipped after a man fell overboard. Four hundred people rushed to assist, causing the hull to capsize. Two hundred are reported drowned.

Concord repair shops highlighted in Boston & Maine Messenger

The Boston & Maine Messenger features a fine write up on the Concord repair shops. The station on the Worcester Neshas and Portland division at Amherst New Hampshire will be named Povemel.
