Carbondale Illinois December 13 7 C Hundley a wealthy pioneer and former mayor and his wife were shot by an intruder in their home. Hundley 76 was shot in the head as he undressed for bed. The intruder fled down Sully and chased Mrs Hundley up stairs then shot her instantly. The assailant locked the front door and disappeared. Neighbors found Hundley dying and Mrs Hundley dead. She was his second wife. Police recall a 40 year old motive linking Hundley to a former music teacher he allegedly killed but was acquitted claiming unwritten law. His first wife later divorced and lives in Memphis Tennessee.
The schooner Alma, a four mast vessel of 562 gross tons, built in 1919 in Nova Scotia and registered in Genoa, was destroyed by fire at sea off Cape Cod. All crew members were rescued by the schooner Hope and Coast Guard patrol boats remained on scene until the ship burned to the water’s edge.
Cobh Ireland December 13 The Amer Celtic was turned over to salvagers after a skeleton crew left the vessel marooned at Cort harbor approaches. Two salvage ships tied up and began removing cargo of wheat apples and American goods as weather concerns rose over the danger of a repeat gale.
The second and final performance of Spanish Moon, presented by Portsmouth Chapter, Order at DeMolay, played last evening at the Portsmouth Theatre to a large audience. The show went smoothly and was well received with props and precision. Specialties by Bob Garland highlighted the program.
At the annual River mouth Chapter Order of the Eastern Star meeting last evening officers were chosen. Worthy matron Sarah W Berna and Worthy patron Stanley M Holiday lead the slate with Clara B St Clair as secretary and Isabel C Coleman as treasurer. Vivian Vorkman is associate matron Iona Drew conducts with Alice Craig as associate conductress. Iona Drew serves as representative and Alice Craig as alternate. Supper preceded the session in the banquet hall.

Joan G. Glass, of the Beacon Oil company, reportedly suffered the loss of part of a finger in an on‑site accident. Further details were not available.
By AP Madison Me a dam across the Kennebec failed early today. Four or five hundred mill workers faced temporary unemployment as local industries shut down. The dam, built 23 years ago to store water, left the town’s wage earners idle just before Christmas. Madison Woolen Co. and American Woolen Co. plants closed, Great Northern Pager Co. crippled.
A worker suffered a finger injury yesterday when a dump collapsed onto his hand while he was installing it. He was escorted to Dr. George E. Pender’s office for treatment of the wound.
Portland police disclosed the identity of a man who robbed Constantine Brothers on Congress Street of $1400 and fled to Boston or New York. He traveled by taxi to Biddeford, then hired another cab for the trip to Boston, prompting the Biddeford driver to alert authorities about his large cash.
In Manchester on December 12 a newlywed, Edward M. Chang, a New York teacher and millionaire from a Manchester furniture deal, allegedly settled a small fortune on his housekeeper Edna Hedwidsop Boulanger before departing for a honeymoon in Egypt. The reported amount ranges between $20,000 and $75,000.
