Portsmouth residents attended the second ARP class at the junior high school where Reginald P. Kennard, a WWI veteran and state instructor, detailed cover concepts, safe indoor and outdoor actions, blackout materials, and the dangers of flying glass and splinters.
The strip along the Red Sea wrested from Italy by British forces will remain under British administration while the United States sends thousands of technicians to Eritrea. Factories and plants will be built behind combat troops to supply the war effort, with American materials flowing in and out as war implements. Plans envisage rail links, rapid city growth in salubrious climates, and use of Italian labor in East Africa to aid the massive base conversion.

A special War Relief Campaign committee has been named by the Portsmouth chapter American Red Cross. The committee will meet this afternoon to elect a chairman to conduct its drive for Portsmouth's quota of 16000 of the country's 50000000 defense fund. The special committee consists of Andrew Jar vis, John WW. Greenaway, J.Verne Wood, Judge Jeremy B. Waldron, Herry Winebaum, Charles M. Dale, Rev. Paul McDonough and J. D Hartford.
President Roosevelt said Wake Island garrison still holds out and praised the Marines. He announced eight new defensive sea areas on both coasts with navigation restrictions likely and mining in some waters. Churchill and Beaverbrook offered to help with material shortages, including Canada shell plant output. Defense bonds sales rose 5.6 million this week.

The American Federation of Labor said the navy informed it that over 1,000 members of Building Trades unions were taken prisoner as Midway and Guam fell to the Japanese. About 780 were captured at Midway and 400 at Guam, with 10,000 more workers said to have been sent to Honolulu for defense work, all reportedly safe so far.
