Washington reports a forecast for New Hampshire indicating probable snow tonight with a cold Tuesday. Not so cold tonight, but colder conditions expected in the west and northern portions on Tuesday.
Police reserves rushed to the Charlestown prison as Moe broke out in the brush factory housing 910 inmates. Firemen controlled the blaze after three alarms. A deputy warden said the fire was set and five prisoners were placed in solitary confinement.
Five men blamed for a blaze left their ranks to flee into the brush factory yard as they attempted to scale the wall. Deputy warden said Guard Edward Tield forced them back with his gun while escaping and they were recaptured by Guard Patrick Boyle.
Under the Civil Works Administration for New Hampshire a Portsmouth Navy Yard project calls for about 40000 in road work, painting, and cleanup across the reservation. About 200 men will be employed from unemployment lists and paid by the state CWA. The Navy Yard will supervise the plan. Lieut Commander R L McLillan will meet in Concord with Miss Patch on O W A matters and worker placement.
The Democratic City Committee urges every Portsmouth citizen to vote tomorrow. Call 2771 or 2772 and a car will pick up voters to take them to their ward. Dr. S F Griffin chairs the committee urging participation.
Ossipee December 11 Harry Hobbs 26 was taken into custody at his father’s Tamworth home and expected to be charged as the driver of a hit and run truck that killed four CCC youths and injured eight others returning from a dance. Sheriff Welch said Hobbs was intoxicated. Names of victims from Massachusetts and Boston areas among the injured and dead are listed along with others treated in local infirmaries.
A nationwide wave of pre winter elements caused deaths and damage across regions. Western Washington suffered floods from the Puyallup Masqually rivers marooning motorists and damaging property while Tacoma and Seattle rail links were washed out. The Midwest Great Lakes and northern plains endured a cold spell with record lows in Quebec and a New Brunswick blizzard easing after heavy snowfall.
The N.has notified Mayor Ss. PAA Pickers from Washington that the government has approved the city's plan of staking care of the big sewer project with local labor. This work involves $132,000 expenditure.
