Detroit December 1 AP secretary of labor Schwellenbach urged an early settlement between General Motors and the CIO United Auto Workers as the strike neared a month and a half. He defended President Truman's labor policy, said a fact finding board would be named if bargaining fails, and noted wartime seizure power remains but will be used sparingly. Ford negotiations with the union continued over a 30 percent across the board pay hike and company protections against work stoppages.
The Knights of Columbus held a golden jubilee ending with a banquet and solemn vespers. dignitaries included Rev. Thomas Duffy Rev. Frederick C. Sweeney and John J. Dears, with awards and gifts presented by Elizabeth Batick and other officials.

Boston officials urge motorists to protect cooling systems as temperatures drop below freezing for the first time this winter. Forecasters forecast a low near 20 degrees tonight with light to moderate winds tomorrow around 20 to 25 mph.
Three persons, one seriously injured and two slightly hurt, were taken to Portsmouth hospital for treatment. Two women on Deer Street were treated and released after a Saturday Market Square accident involving Jo an Hodedon Jr. of Pleasant Street. State official Virgil White reported 59 injuries in New Hampshire last week, with three fatalities, versus one fatality in the prior year.
A special meeting of the Portsmouth Community Chest Budget committee has been called by Chairman R. C. L. Greer for tomorrow at 3:30 PM in the Chamber of Commerce room on Daniels Street.

A Portsmouth police report recounts a scuffle on Congress street involving Roy Cutting of 169 Concord Way and Francis Nugent of 477 Circuit road. A prior incident last Monday involved two juveniles breaking a display window, the fourth such break in four months per the owner.
An army medical bulletin reported Major General George S Patton was completely paralyzed below the third cervical vertebra with dislocation of the fourth cervical observed closely. An X ray showed the fourth cervical back in place and his condition was described as satisfactory.
