New Navy SeaMaster Bomber Explodes During Test Flight
A Martin SeaMaster giant seaplane exploded in mid air two hours after takeoff from Glenn L. Martin Co. near Baltimore. Four aboard, three Martin employees and one Navy officer, with one unidentified body recovered. Eyewitnesses saw heavy smoke and a parachute open before the crash about 70 miles southeast of Washington near Chesapeake Bay. The SeaMaster, first experimental model of a long range seaplane, had its first flight last July and wowed Adm. Burke and Adm. Mountbatten last month. It was designed to cruise at 40,000 feet with a 30,000 pound payload for minelaying and reconnaissance. Another SeaMaster had been built but not flown yet.
