A blaze at First National Stores Super Market and Mother Goose shopper in Rochester Saturday afternoon caused about 75 000 in damage. Two cashiers Pauline Chapman 19 and Barbara Abbott 16 were overcome by smoke and taken to Frishle Memorial hospital. they were rescued by clerks after discovering the basement fire at about 2 35 pm. Three men were arrested and two questioned as officers seized 21,000 pounds sugar two trucks two cars 4000 gallons of mash and about 100 gallons of 190 proof alcohol from the farm.

Sergeant Arthur Lang son of Mr and Mrs Harold Lang of Newmarket was reported missing in action in the North African theater by the War department. A radioman gunner, he shipped overseas in September after radio engineering and aerial gunnery training in South Carolina. Lang, Newmarket High School class president in 1939, played basketball and enlisted September 23, 1942. His wife and daughter reside in South Kings Ds.
Robert Joseph Mills, Ir seaman first class in the US Navy Reserve, 22, of Kittery Point, has earned a commendation signed by Lt Comdr Floyd B. T. Myhre for noteworthy duty aboard a destroyer in the Pacific. The citation cites seven enemy engagements and Mills conduct under fire at five inch gun stations. Mills trained at Newport and went to sea duty after 1942 enlistment following work at Kittery Wester works and Kittery Point schools.
The National Association of Evangelicals state conference announced its organization today. Officers elected include Rev. Ivar Sellavaag of Portsmouth as chairman Rev. Ariel Ainsworth of Rochester as treasurer and Rev Dale Gish of Cancia as secretary.

Dover’s F. Clyde Keefe, a Democrat, won history’s 3 term mayor by defeating Charles Hartnett by 1,028 votes. In Newburyport Bossy Gillis suffered a heavy loss as Andrew Gillis fell to John M. Kelleher in Rochester, while Rochester voters rejected a Sabbath afternoon movie amendment 458 to 380 amid low turnout. Final tallies: Kelleher 3,403 Gillis 1,624.
