Portsmouth voters cast ballots to choose city officials for two years. A noon count showed turnout near 1936 levels with an uptick of 163 over the last election, about half the voters voting by noon. Polls close at 4 pm as ward officers tally results.
In Madrid on December 8 government artillery raked insurgent positions in Moncloa and Camines as cold hindered expected Fascist infantry assaults around the capital. The emergency defense council said 21 people were killed in a Guadalajara air raid and a former royal palace was destroyed. A minor air attack was also reported on El Escorial, with the main Fascist push expected from the Escorial sector.
Piscataqua Chapter of the Degree of Pocahontas held its regular Monday evening meeting in the lodge hall on Congress street. Reports showed progress and plans for a Christmas party for members’ children on December 21 at four o'clock with Santa Claus and gifts. A free evening celebration was planned with Miss Katherine Hargen in charge. members were asked to bring a small gift. Farewell greetings were extended to Mr and Mrs William Davis who travel to Florida for winter. Refreshments included cookies coffee sandwiches and grape juice. Guests listed include Margaret Wilson Betty Woody Marjorie Brunette Rena Ulmer and others.
A birthday party for Robert Benson was held at the home of his parents on Hill street Monday evening marking his fifth anniversary. Eighteen guests attended as rooms were decorated in Christmas colors. Children played games and sang songs. Betty Woody performed a tap dance.
Moran was high man in the revolver shoot at the Piscataqua Rifle Revolver club last evening.
A gay royal romance unfolds in Love in Exile at Arcadia with Olive Brook Helen Vinson and Mary Carlisle. The king loses his crown because of a woman and regains it for her, with the show opening Wednesday.

New York stock trading showed rallies but overall movement remained slow. Top performers included Santa Fe, New York Central, Bethlehem, U S Steel, Chrysler, American Telephone, Western Union and General Electric. Midfield shares featured General Motors, Montgomery Ward, Sears Roebuck, Consolidated Edison, U S Rubber and Lowe's.
William Lawrence, assistant national director of health and safety for the Boy Scouts of America, will undertake a ten day service visit to the Daniel Webster Council in New Hampshire. Lawrence, an Eagle Scout, has served in multiple volunteer roles from patrol leader to district commissioner and brings extensive Scouting experience to the charter year health and safety emphasis.
Chippy, a husky belonging to Burdette Liljehult of Cass Street, was struck by a truck Saturday afternoon and killed. The dog was cherished by local children and remarked as the only of its breed in the area, causing sorrow among playmates.
The College Club of this city celebrated its 20th anniversary with a banquet at the Rockingham Hotel. Speakers reviewed the club’s history and future open road plans while members recalled the early days, and arrangements for a Mardi Gras were announced.
Thirty members of the Golden Rule Circle of King's Daughters gathered at Mrs. Blanche Carkin's Maplewood avenue home for a regular meeting. Mrs. Della Dixon presided and a program from Silver Cross Magazine followed. Ruth Tucker led a Bible study. The group voted to donate 25 dollars to the District Nursing Association and 5 dollars to the New Hampshire Council of Re mas festival, and planned comfort bags for the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth Navy Yard.
A five alarm blaze in Boston gutted the Boston Plate and Window Glass Co near South Station. Fire Chief Samuel Pope assessed damage at 150000 dollars as firemen fought ice coated streets and icy ladders. Glass and debris damaged surrounding buildings while hoses and hot air explosions shattered windows for miles. Freight cars were moved to avoid danger but remained undamaged.
London December 8 Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin rushed icy roads to Fort Belvedere amid a royal crisis over King Edward's future of throne or marriage to Mrs Wallis Simpson. He met with Monckton and Sir Eric Mieville as the king held decisive talks with his brothers Duke of York and Duke of Kent.
Cannes report says Mrs Wal lis Simpson plans to pursue a morganatic marriage with King Edward despite offering to give him up. Friends say she hopes the king will win his throne and endure the fight to the end. A spokesman denies any such belief, calling the statement spontaneous.
Sweet is bound over for the April term of Superior Court after an arrest by Officer Walter Lyman of Raymond for breaking, entering and larceny at Arthur Walsh’s camp in Raymond. Allegedly he took a rifle and a pair of field glasses.
