The engagement of Ida Willena White of this city to Gerald LaRoy Smith of Rochester was announced by her parents Mrs Iva F White and Mr White. Miss White studies at the Boston Conservatory of Music and Smith is Harvard Class of 31 graduate now at BU Medical School.
Paunie A Gardiner Rebekan Lodge served a public supper in LO with a good number of patrons. Menu included meats baked beans crab meat salad rolls assorted pies and coffee. Mrs Dodee was general chairman. First fishing of season at Great Bay by Bill Powell and others yielded a catch today.
The Board of Selectmen of Kittery reports no evidence of incendiarism after a thorough probe into recent fires. Investigators concluded the incidents were caused by natural crusts and not by a firebug.
A fond attendance greeted the New Franklin Parent Teacher Association meeting despite weather. The program featured piano duets by Eunice Wood and Ruth Staples, solo turns by Esther Tovey and Mary Maley, a sword dance, and an overture. Ice cream followed, and the annual Christmas sale is planned for December with an operetta by the school children.
In Nanking, 18 sites including the foreign minister’s residence, the finance minister’s home, and the Nationalist party HQ were heavily guarded as 2,000 to 3,000 students protested China’s conciliatory stance on Japan’s Manchurian affair. Police and guards reinforced the Central Daily News office and Japanese concessions. Authorities planned to prevent escalation, while fearing domestic and international repercussions.
Naples reports foreign minister Grandi and party arrive in Italy at 8 30 am after a trip to Ashington. The ministry prepared a 100 page report for Rome and talks with President Hoover and Secretary Stimson, while Mussolini expressed pleasure by telephone before Grandi’s landing. Americans reportedly breakfast more heartily than the English or French.
